Wiganers in Kazan

Waiting for Video...

WELCOME to Kazan, the city billed as Russia’s third capital, and one of the country’s largest economic, scientific and cultural centres.

The main attraction is the Kazan Kremlin, a World Heritage Site and a building of stunning beauty.

In front of it is an impressive statue of a serpent, the traditional emblem of the city.

But what’s this draped across it?

A blue and white flag.

Ah yes, Wigan Athletic are in town.

After 2,500 supporters took over Bruges a couple of months ago, the European party has moved to Kazan.

Given the 5,000-mile round trip, they have understandably travelled in smaller numbers.

But look carefully – or not so carefully in the case of Paul Woolham and Steve Best - and you’ll find them.

They’re both happy to be here; both happy to support their team.

“It’s unreal mate, unreal,” Paul tells me.

“Who would have thought Wigan Athletic would ever have been playing out here in a proper game. Unreal.”
