Young guns did Bob proud

Callum Mcmanaman

IT may have been a dismal FA Cup defeat for Latics last weekend, but for manager Roberto Martinez he was at least delighted with the performances of some of his young guns.

Some fans will no doubt still be struggling to get over the 2-1 humbling at League Two Swindon Town, but looking forward Martinez is clearly encouraged and has high hopes for some of Latics’ emerging talent.

One of the Latics youngsters in question, Callum McManaman, scored at the County Ground, and Martinez has seen fit to sing the 20-year-old’s praises.

The Latics boss said: “To see Callum McManaman as bright as he was last weekend was terrific, it’s always good to see youngsters progress and do well.

“Jordan Mustoe adapted really well too, so within the disappointment of losing the cup game, the bigger picture for the future make much more positive reading.

“Callum is obviously ready to help with the first team in the Premier League now, that’s quite clear. In football you do have to take your chances, and in terms of opportunities Callum has done just that.

“After a very successful loan spell at Blackpool where he tested himself in a very competitive Championship competition, he’s since taking advantage of the situation here since returning.

“Playing games will be the next step in his career, and that’s very important.

“I have been very impressed with his attitude and his performance on Saturday despite the result.”

Martinez added: “All the players in the squad have been working really hard and at this stage of the season we do have a clearer picture of what we need to do.

“We know we need to be more than ready for the Manchester City game of course. That’s the next big test.”

Rather than criticising every word that comes out of Martinez's mouth fans be wise to how the media works. A full weeks news stories will come from one or two interviews, Martinez can only answer the questions he's asked and headlines rarely have anything to do with the story, if you're asked a question about a player you want to move on, you don't slate them in the press, if you're asked about young players you've brought through the ranks, you don't destroy their confidence because they had an ideifferent game, it's the same PR game every manager plays. Similarly when I read comments about Martinez's touchline manner and style I wonder why it isn't brought up when we do well, it's completely meaningless and just a way for fans to address their frustrations because they know our hands are tied in what we can do. You shouldn't go over the top if we have a good result, neither should you go the other way when we're poor, it's nothing to do with not caring and everything to do with judging us over the course of the season.

We've a couple of promising young players who might see the light of day next season in a middling Championship side. Otherwise, it's a long time since Leighton Baines came through the ranks.

What a load of cobblers. Our ability to use youth is a myth. What we need is a left fullback(or wingback) and a goal scorer. If this had been addressed as it should have been early in RM's reign we wouldn't now be staring down the barrel of gun. It sounds like some of us have thrown in the towel and are prepared to make any excuse for playing in the lower leagues. We know Whelan couldn't give a monkeys. There's no need for everybody else to follow like lemmings.

I think martinez has run out of things to say about the players of the first team and now he is trying to move comments away for them buy going on about our young players because like WAFC says we all now we have a good crop of young players.

The one thing I would have thought all Latics fans agree on is we have a good crop of young players, if anything they should get more first team opportunities.
