Bailey in a battle to face Saints

Aussie powerhouse Phil Bailey is fighting to be fit for Warriors' Super League showdown at St Helens on Friday.

Bailey missed the impressive 28-10 win over Leeds, which was Wigan's fifth successive victory, and coach Brian Noble admits he is a major doubt to meet Saints.

Bailey, who has deputised for injured captain Sean O'Loughlin, suffered a dead leg against Bradford Bulls nine days ago.

Noble said: "These type of injuries can be slow going.

"But while he is making progress, it leaves it tight for Phil to be involved against Saints.

"We are certainly keeping our fingers crossed that he will be okay because he is a significant loss for us.

"He was standing up as one of our big leaders and got the captain's armband on the strength of that.

"Phil has had a big influence in that time and his experience has proved invaluable."

With O'Loughlin likely to be sidelined until the Challenge Cup semi-final at the earliest, Martin Gleeson is likely to skipper Warriors at Knowsley Road.

Gleeson was handed the armband against Leeds, and helped Wigan reverse a 10-6 half-time deficit to overpower the champions.

Noble added: "There was a great euphoria in the dressing room after the Leeds win, and rightly so. The players showed terrific character – I was proud of them.

"But that's gone now and we start again, looking ahead to Friday and another mighty challenge.

"We've given ourselves a platform and have created a lot of momentum, so there are a lot of positives to focus on."
