Cash boost for Warriors

WIGAN’S coffers have been boosted by £60,000 by their two silverware victories this week – money that will be invested into player development.

The Evening Post can reveal that Warriors received a cheque for £50,000 for claiming the League Leaders’ Shield last Sunday – the first time that the table-toppers have received a cash bonus.

Previously, all winning money was divided dependant exclusively on their success in the play-offs – regardless of league position – but the RFL introduced the extra cash prize this season to reward the league leaders at the end of the regular campaign.

In addition to their £50,000, Warriors also pocketed £ 10,000 for winning the Carnegie Nines tournament on Wednesday night with a reserve side headed by Under-20s boss Darren Fletcher.

The unexpected cash injection is relatively modest in comparison to the club’s overall turnover, but chairman Ian Lenagan says it will go towards helping keep Wigan’s production line of homegrown talent well-oiled for the future.

Warriors have invested heavily in player development this year under Michael Maguire, who is currently in Scotland with the first-team squad at a training camp. Lenagan – pictured celebrating Wigan’s league-topping exploits at Hull KR – said: “This money will go towards improving facilities and general player development. Michael is very thorough in his preparations and we’ve seen the rewards of that on the field.

“We’ve already seen this season many of our younger players step up into the first-team and perform admirably, and we want that to continue.

“It’s great to be winning trophies again. They may only be relatively small trophies, but they’re trophies all the same, and when Wigan enter a competition we want to be winning it. I was very happy for our Under-20s.”
