Deacs: I want to play on
WIGAN have received a huge boost as they aim to build on their table-topping exploits with Paul Deacon revealing his intention to play on next season.
The scrum-half has been in fine form since returning from a troubling groin injury.
And he is enjoying his role at the heart of Michael Maguire’s Super League high-flyers so much that he wants to defer his retirement – and subsequent switch into coaching – for at least another year.
Deacon said: “It’s good to be back after that injury, and starting games.
“I’m really enjoying playing in this team and, the way I’m feeling, I would love to play next year.
“I’m going to sit down with Madge (Maguire) soon and have a really good chat and see what he’s thinking.
“But if he’s happy for me to carry on then I’d like to.”
Maguire had previously stated he would be happy for the 31-year-old to play on and praised his experience as being vital in securing the league leaders’ shield.
Deacon, a former Hindley amateur, has started eight of Warriors’ last nine matches and proved a shrewd organiser and distributor.
He was Maguire’s only signing for this season and arrived from Bradford on a unique arrangement that twinned a three-year coaching contract and one-year playing deal.
“I said at the start of the year I’d wait until I’d finished playing before I start really concentrating on coaching, and that’s been the case,” the 11-Test Great Britain veteran says.
Deacon is Bradford’s all-time record points-scorer, with 2,609, and is set to face the club where he spent 12 largely successful years in Wigan’s next home game next Friday.
