Mixed fortunes for Tomkins brothers

Full-back Tomkins was seen leaving the DW Stadium wearing a protective boot after last Friday’s 22-18 win against Wakefield.

Wane revealed he rolled his ankle during the nail-biting victory, which sent them two points clear at the top of the Super League table.

The 27-year-old is a doubt for Friday’s trip to bottom-club Leeds, but the injury is not thought to be serious.

Wane said: “It’s touch and go if he’ll play against Leeds, we’ll have a better idea in the week.”

Brother Joel, though, has been ruled out until the end of the season after being told knee surgery can not wait.

The dual-code England international was resigned to needing an operation – he has been nursing the injury for several weeks – but was hoping to make it until the end of the year before going under the knife.

However, the problem worsened last week and after undergoing scans, he has been told he will need procedures on both knees which will keep him out until 2017.

He joins Micky McIlorum, Tony Clubb, Liam Farrell and Anthony Gelling on the sidelines, while John Bateman is still serving a club suspension.

Josh Charnley was having a shoulder injury reassessed today and is also a doubt for Friday.

But centre Dan Sarginson and prop Dom Crosby may come back into the frame for Friday’s televised match.

New recruit Frank-Paul Nuuausala was due to arrive today and may make his Super League debut in the Sky-televised game at Headingley.

The Kiwi international has joined on a three-and-a-half year deal from Canberra.

Lee Mossop is available after serving a one-match suspension.

The Cumbrian front-rower is wanted by Salford for next season.

He is under contract for 2017 but a move away would not come as a surprise, given he has not managed to rekindle his best form since returning to Wigan from an injury-disrupted season at Parramatta.

Wigan will discover today whether captain Sean O’Loughlin will be charged for the high shot on Chris Annakin last Friday.

He was sent off by referee James Child – the first red-card of his 15-year career.

A depleted Wigan Under-19s side went down 26-12 to Castleford last Saturday.
