No rest for eager Veivers
Warriors assistant coach Phil Veivers says the squad's forthcoming training camp in Lanzarote will be no fun in the sun holiday.
Twenty-six players are flying out to the Canary Islands a week on Thursday to fine-tune their preparations for the Super League campaign which kicks-off in a month's time.
And Veivers says they will be kept busy from morning through to night - with the exception of one afternoon off – as Brian Noble and his staff plot what they hope will be a successful season.
Upon their return, Warriors play two friendlies against Huddersfield and Leigh before the season starts at home to Wakefield on February 8.
Veivers said: "We're in Lanzarote from January 15 to 22 and we can get three weeks' worth of training crammed into a week.
"We've got some great facilities over there and we'll be keeping the lads busy to make sure we're as ready as possible to start the season.
"It's all about forward progress, we've been making everything as progressive as possible since the lads first came back to training on November 10.
"We've been getting bodies back at various times after the World Cup, but everyone is back now and 26 players are going to Lanzarote.
"A typical day over there could start as early as 7am for some of the lads who need to do some extra weights.
"Then we'll probably have a meeting about our structure after breakfast before getting out on to the field to implement what we've been talking about.
"There will be skills work in the afternoon, a trip to the gym, all finished off with a cold plunge at the end to get rid of stiffness.
"It's an important part of pre-season, we then come back and play a couple of games which will be about picking up our match fitness.
"It's good to get all the lads together, and with us taking 26, it allows us to play a competitive game against each other."
With Britain shivering in a colder-than-normal winter, the trip to the Canaries sunshine will be a welcome boost for Warriors.
And it will be a much needed change of scene from the usual training haunts around Wigan.
Veivers said: "We haven't wrapped the lads in cotton wool since they came back – they've been out in all weathers.
"We've been training at Orrell, on the running track at Robin Park, and in the JJB Soccerdome...we've travelled around a bit.
"It's all about building up to the top level and things have gone well so far. We're getting things in place before we go to Lanzarote."
