Sutton enjoying stepping-up to a different challenge

Prop Ryan Sutton says he doesn't care about playing out of position, as long as he's on the field.

The 20-year-old made the move into the second row during Wigan’s 23-20 win over Salford last month, and has remained there since.

And despite having to adapt – defending in the second row is particularly different to in the front row – Sutton is happy to fit in where he is needed, again taking the role on for last weekend’s Challenge Cup quarter-final win over Castleford.

“It’s a different challenge but I’m enjoying it at the moment,” he said.

“As long as I’m playing on the field – I’m just enjoying what I’m doing.”

Sutton, who made his debut in 2014, has also covered the loose forward role, but admitted it was a surprise when he was switched to second row at the AJ Bell Stadium when Greg Burke left the field with a head injury.

“It was at Salford – he (Shaun Wane) just put me there and I had to do what I had to do,” he said.

“It’s a bit different but as long as you keep talking you’re sweet.

“I’m happy to play wherever I’m put at the end of the day.”

Following Saturday’s defeat of the Tigers, in which coach Wane hailed the club’s first half display as the best of the season, Sutton says Warriors need to travel to Catalans and ‘prove a point’ this coming weekend.

Sutton was on the bench for last season’s 58-16 drubbing in the south of France.

Wigan are traveling on the day of the game this year, and Sutton hopes the change of routine will bring a different result.

“It’s going be a tough game,” he admitted.

“We have to go over there now and prove a point.

“It could work out better for us – get there and hopefully get the two points and get

out.”

While admitting Wigan’s attack has stuttered for much of this season, Sutton says there is more to come from Saturday’s first half which saw Warriors return to the sheds 22-0 in front.

“We really executed well,” he said.

“We’ve not been good attacking all year so to get the points in the first half was good.

“We just need to improve on that now and keep improving throughout the second half.

“Every person stepped-up. We’ve a really good feeling in the camp.”
