Tomkins hails prop idols
Stuart Fielden
SAM Tomkins has welcomed the news that Stuart Fielden and Andy Coley are staying at Wigan.
The England Test star reckons the prop duo can help Warriors lay a platform towards building a sustained period of Super League success.
Fielden and Coley, who were both out of contract at the end of this season, yesterday penned new deals.
Fielden – 31 next week – has signed a two-year deal while Coley has a contract for 2011, with an option for the following season.
Tomkins said: “I’m glad they’re sticking around.
“I’m sure they had opportunities elsewhere but there are special things happening at Wigan right now and I’m sure they realised that. We’ve enjoyed some success already this year and we want to build on this next season, and they’re a big part of our plans.”
Coley was considering hanging up his boots after receiving a job offer away from the game, while Fielden was thought to have attracted offers from former club Bradford as well as Hull FC.
“Stu is one of those players who you look to when things get tough, and he takes a lot of the tough carries,” continued Tomkins, who was this week named in the Super League Dreamteam for a second successive season.
“He’s been a top player for a decade and he’s still a brilliant professional.
“He’s one of the first to arrive and last to leave at training, he looks after himself, his diet is good – he’s one of those players who are great for the younger lads to look up to and aspire to be like.”
