Tuson admits Warriors were complacent
Sam Tomkins scores against the Giants
CHRIS Tuson has blamed complacency for Wigan’s shock opening-day defeat.
The Warriors crashed 20-16 to a depleted Huddersfield side on Sunday afternoon – a loss which rocked the thousands of fans who braved the cold-snap and turned up at the DW Stadium.
Shaun Wane chaired a frank discussion with the playing group at their Orrell training base yesterday.
And tough-tackling Tuson candidly admitted their mental approach was not good enough.
The 23-year-old said: “When we played them in a pre-season friendly, we only had a young side and we ran them close.
“Maybe that was our downfall, maybe we went into the game expecting it to be easier than it was.
“We’ve just had a tough meeting about it and maybe the way we prepared in our heads, the way we thought about it, was wrong.
“Our attitude was off, and it was definitely a wake-up call.
“We’ve seen some clips (of the game) and we went away from what we do well.
“I think that’s why we lost the game.”
Tuson was absolved from blame by Wane, who also praised fellow replacement forward Liam Farrell.
The game marked Wane’s first since being appointed head coach, but Tuson rubbished suggestions they may need a ‘bedding-in’ period before they hit their straps. Wigan matched Huddersfield try-for-try – Danny Brough’s goal-kicking ultimately proved decisive – but that offered little comfort.
Tuson said: “Waney doesn’t accept excuses, he wants everyone to be a man and if you play badly, you’ve got to take it on the chin.
“We can’t put it down to rust. The season’s up and running now and there were no excuses.
“We had loads of chances but we didn’t take them, and that was disappointing because we’ve done heaps of skill work in ore-season.”
The Warriors must dust themselves down quickly ahead of the visit of champions Leeds in four days’ time. “We’ll definitely come with more enthusiasm,” he added.
“They’re usually tight games between us, no matter how we’ve come into the fixture or they’ve come into it. We’re going to concentrate on ourselves.
“If we stick to our structures and turn up with the attitude we have here, I think we’ll be okay.”
Liam Farrell will face the RFL Disciplinary Committee tonight after being charged with the Grade B offence of making dangerous contact on Leroy Cudjoe in the 40th minute.
He was also issued with a formal warning for use of the forearm on Luke Robinson in the final minute.

Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at 08:38 PMI think the comments about Finch are harsh and he's certainly not like Tim Smith was when he was a Warrior as Finch can tackle + often does so above his weight. I'll agree his kicking game was poor but he wasn't the only one. Brough showed us how to kick. It's only one game and far too early to be putting the team down.

Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at 07:28 PMThe first game of the season, and the word " complacency" is used by Tuson, Not what you would expect from a side that expects to do well. the" mind set".should be there from game one, and then throughout the season. Thats how you finish up winning things, innit! !!!!!!

Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at 03:17 PMI thought Finch had a decent season last year but on Sunday looked back toi his rubbish form when he first came! Tim Smith did play well on Friday but lets remember who was coach when he was with us & ask ourselves was he allowed the freedom to play as he did for Widnes

Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at 01:07 PMI totally agree about finch,he reminds me a lot of tim smith who was keeping sam tomkins out of the team purely because he was an aussie with a big reputation.Incidentally i saw the same tim smith playing for wakefield the other night on sky and he was brilliant and won the man of the match award. Its a pity he never played like that for wigan.

Tuesday, February 7, 2012 at 09:35 PMFinch is rubbish and always has been. Play Sam Powell for heavens sake. I am not sure Wane is a good head coach. Either way I am sure Finch needs to go. Last time I pay money to watch that guy.

Tuesday, February 7, 2012 at 04:41 PMAnyone who has played any kind of sport knows that the easiest mistake you can make is to dis-respect your opponent in any way. Thinking "we are only play such and such a team" or just thinking you will be home and dry because your opposition has players injured is the most basic and most fatal mistake anyone can make. Total commitment & the will to win from every player until the final whistle blows is the only answer. Come on lads do it for us and for Waney - he deserves it and so do we.

Tuesday, February 7, 2012 at 02:35 PMAs a Warrior fan I could not see any moves s such. The tackeling left a lot to be desired and for a lot of the game we were to slow. Haveing said that I will be at the match on Saturday. Come on Wigan
