Wane: Game isn't about my milestone

Shaun Wane takes charge of his 150th game tonight

The televised showdown with Warrington marks his 150th game as head coach of his hometown club.

It will also see the former prop surpass the number of appearances he made as a player for Wigan – 149 – but he admits he is “not too comfortable” under the spotlight. He said: “It’s a good feeling but I’m not too comfortable with marking milestones.

“Hopefully I’ll get to 200, 250 and 300 games, I want to stay here for a long time, but it’s not something I dwell on.

“All my focus is on making sure we turn up and perform against a very, very good Warrington side.”

Wane had already served Wigan as a scout and junior coach before being promoted to a full-time role as Michael Maguire’s assistant ahead of the 2010 campaign.

He took the helm in November the following year and guided the Warriors to a league leaders’ shield in his first campaign and a stunning double in 2013.

Wigan have also reached both of the last Grand Finals, and are currently joint-top of the Super League table despite a string of absentees.

Injured captain Sean O’Loughlin said: “To get to 150 games is a massive achievement.

“It’s credit to him for applying himself with the academy and then as an assistant, and he’s kicked on since.”

Wane is already the fifth-longest serving Wigan coach and can overtake Joe Egan and John Monie within the next 12 months. Eric Ashton did a decade in the role while Jim Sullivan spent twice as long at the helm.

Warrington beat Wigan 28-16 at the DW at the start of the month.

Wane said: “They have some unbelievable talent in their side, I’m a big admirer of some of their individuals.

“We know the areas we need to improve.

“We’re not killing it in attack, but when you look at the players we have to come back, we have to be positive.

“Having George back will help us become crisper.”
