Wane: We are driven by anger

Wigan, second in the table, have six games left before the play-offs.

And after being dumped out of the Challenge Cup, Wane has his sights on league leaders shield and Grand Final glory.

The coach said: “Potentially, we’ve got eight games left (if they reach Old Trafford) and we have to treat every one like a Grand Final.

“We’re going into every game like it’s must-win, it’s really important we do that and get something out of this year.”

Wigan, boosted by the return of Anthony Gelling and Liam Farrell, head to the Mend-a-hose Jungle on the back of a 60-12 mauling of Wakefield a week ago.

Wane says their energetic display was rooted in the disappointment of being thrown off the Wembley trail by Hull FC - and he is confident his players will harness that feeling until the end of the year.

He said: “After the semi-final, when we spoke about it, there was more anger there than feeling sorry for themselves.

“I won’t put up with (self-pity) with any losses, you just have to get on with it like a man, get into the next game and just show people what you can do.

“I thought we did that last week, and it was a good testament to the mental toughness of this team.

“They know they could’ve won that Hull game, it was just a couple of easy defensive lapses that cost us the game and now we’re not going to Wembley and they are.

“So there was a lot of anger from me and from everyone.”

Wigan have won three games against Castleford this season, including a heated 33-26 win at their ground back in May.

Wane said: “It’s a great atmosphere there, it’s a good rugby league town, so it’s a place we like going we enjoy going to.

“I like how they play and having Rangi Chase back at the club seems to have lifted everybody, and they’ve got some brilliant individuals.”
