The Warriors could only really relax when Matty Smith struck a 76th-minute drop-goal which sealed a 33-26 victory at Castleford.

It moved them second in the Super League ladder, level with leaders Hull FC ahead of their match with St Helens.

Wane, who had lost his last two visits to the Mend-a-hose Jungle, said: “We played tough.

“When we pulled the trigger we hurt them - we just didn’t do it enough. And we bombed a few chances.

“I think we’re at four of five out of 10, there’s miles of improvement in us.

“But I’m happy with that win.”

Josh Charnley finished with two tries and Smith hit six goals from seven attempts in an assured display, alongside George Williams.

Dom Manfredi, Sam Tomkins and Sam Powell also bagged tries in a contest that was both exciting and scrappy.

Wane added: “We weren’t at our best but we showed toughness.

“We played when we needed to play, Matty and George managed the game well.

“Cas’ are a good team, Daryl will be sick as a pig but I thought we deserved the win, and I don’t say that being arrogant.

“To sit here with a win against a form team of the competition... we’re doing okay.”

Castleford coach Daryl Powell admitted he may be fined for criticism of referee Ben Thaler in his post-match press conference.

While he had no real issue with the result, he said: “There was some unacceptable things there.

“I’ll get fined for this and that’s great.

“But the way he talks to players is unacceptable. Respect goes both ways.”

Farrell, who hasn’t featured since the start of last month, is expected to be sidelined for eight weeks, Wane revealed last night.
