Wane: We can improve

Shaun Wane has called on Wigan to sharpen their attack

The Warriors are looking for their third straight win on the road, following wins over Leeds at Magic Weekend and Castleford last week.

But despite racking-up 73 points in their last two games, the boss says sharpening up their attack is still Wigan’s main priority.

“Our attack still isn’t there, yet. But it was a good performance against Cas’,” he said.

“Even with the players we have out, I still think there are improvements.

“Half-way through the regular season, George (Williams) and Matty (Smith) haven’t played much together - and certainly not with Sam - and I think you’re going to see a big improvement.”

One of the highlights of last week’s success at the Mend-a-Hose Jungle was full-back Sam Tomkins’ performance, as he registered a third try in three games since returning from knee surgery in the off-season.

But Wane says even his marquee superstar still hasn’t reached his best form.

“Sam is showing small things, he’s a real competitor and it’s going to be time before he’s at his best but he’s showing to me he’s a class act,” he explained.

“It’s not just his involvement - his presence creates chances for others.”

Wane has also warned the task in front of his players tonight can’t be estimated by Salford position in Super League’s bottom four.

The Red Devils are two points off the pace in the race for the Super 8s, but a six-point deduction distracts from the fact they have won four of their last six.

“Salford, the table distorts it,” Wane said.

“Watch what they did to Wakefield, they have red-hot halves, strong back-five, great back-rowers. If they hadn’t lost points they’d be up there challenging - they are a very, very good team. The deduction has galvanised their team spirit.

“We didn’t have an easy game at the DW and they’re playing with more confidence, if anything. We’ve analysed them and worked on ways to break them down.”

Following their 38-8 win at home to mid-table rivals Wakefield last week, Wane is expecting the Red Devils to carry their strong form into tonight’s encounter.

He said: “Salford will run harder and be more direct and hit harder, I’m expecting a very motivated team.”
