SHAUN Wane admitted he was disappointed after Wigan laboured to a 16-10 win at Salford last night.
But the coach insisted they will be better for the game, saying he will have an “honest” chat with the players today about their high error rate – before looking at ways of ironing out the problems before the start of Super League on February 5.
Wane said: “I was a bit disappointed with that.
“It was a good hit-out, they made more substitutions than us, but we still made too many errors.
“When we did have the ball we troubled them, but we didn’t keep hold of the ball enough to trouble them enough.
“It’s convinced me that when we do get the ball, we’ll score points – but we must complete our sets first.
“I knew Salford would give it to us and they did. We showed some character in defence, and in the end it will do us good.
“We’ve got 10 days to go before the start of the season, and we’ll spend every one of those days looking at cutting the errors out. Those errors – that’s not us.
“We’ll have a real honest chat about it, I’ll get feedback from the players and the good thing is we can fix it, and we will fix it.”
Pat Richards gave the Warriors a dream start with a fifth-minute try.
But the visiting fans had to wait another 50 minutes to see their side cross again through Sam Tomkins, who was playing his first match of the year.
That made the scoreline 10-4 following Danny Williams’ first-half touchdown.
Liam Farrell and Wigan old-boy Iafeta Paleaaesina exchanged late tries.
Wigan’s hungry defensive display was a positive, but their error-strewn attack prevented them building any real momentum.
Tomkins’ bright performance was the notable stand-out.
“He’s just a competitor, and he’ll never change,” said Wane.
“I was impressed with how he came back, given it was his first game in so long.”
A young Wigan team featuring Gil Dudson and Anthony Gelling will take on Leigh this Friday, completing Wigan’s pre-season programme ahead of their Super League opener against Huddersfield at the DW on February 5.
