Young boxer hits national final

A High school pupil from Up Holland has boxed his way into a national amateur championship bout.

Tom Aitchison, 14, won his semi-final fight in Bolton last weekend by four points to three and will now feature in the 42kg final of the Royal Navy Schools ABAE Championships, to take place in Dagenham, London, over this coming weekend.

The Up Holland high School pupil, who trains at the Skelmersdale ABC, was pleased with the result and is excited at the prospect of competing for a title.

Tom said: "It was a tricky bout, my opponent was awkward.

"But I've been training hard so was glad to win and I can't wait for the finals."

This is the third year of a successful partnership between the Royal Navy and the Amateur Boxing Association of England. (ABAE)

Through the partnership the Royal Navy aims to increase awareness of the careers available in the Navy.

The deal secures Navy involvement at ABAE training camps and the option for the Royal Marines Sports Presentation Team to visit 700 clubs across England.

Captain of Naval Recruiting, Captain Chris Alcock said: "We wish all the boys good luck in their finals next month."
