Boot up the backside worked, says Mathers

Full-back Richard Mathers admits the bruising criticism served up after their shock loss to Huddersfield in July helped spark them into action.
The Warriors' 34-4 defeat at the JJB Stadium in July was met by a furious response from fans and club bosses. Some supporters called for coach Brian Noble to be sacked.

But since then they have lost just one of their seven matches to stand just 80 minutes away from a date against St Helens in the October 4 Grand Final. And Mathers says the soul-searching after the Giants loss acted as a launchpad for their assault on the play-offs.

He said: "We were galvanised by the criticism that we copped from all quarters.
"It was deserved and it shook us up, and we had a good long hard look at ourselves – collectively and individually."

Mathers, who signed earlier this year from Australian club Gold Coast Titans, enjoyed arguably his best game for Wigan in last week's 50-26 victory over Catalans. And he knows all about tomorrow night's (Friday) opponents Leeds, having developed through the same Headingley nursery that produced Danny McGuire and Rob Burrow.

Leeds lost 38-10 to St Helens last Friday night but Mathers said: "You'd be a fool to think Leeds would perform that badly twice, they very rarely do and so we're under no illusions about how hard it will be.

"You can be banged up and bruised from a long season, but it's two 80 minute games to go for us to win the biggest prize ever – we're that close."

Another former Leeds player, Mark Calderwood, departs Wigan at the end of this season for Hull. Calderwood was a firm favourite at his boyhood club and knows only too well the danger they pose.

"I know all about Rob Burrow an Danny McGuire and even if you stop their forwards it's hard to stop them," said the winger.
"You could go from one to 17 and pick out a danger player for them.

"They came second in the comp by a country mile so we'll have to play well."

Well said richie, it takes alot of bottle to take such brutal critisism and to react so positivly to it and there arnt many who have done it as well as Mathers. Fielden, Barrett are two others who have really stood up after being critisised and i am very happy Richie Mathers is playing for wigan next year, didnt think id say that after a few months ago but then i was one of the many who though Richards was poor after a season so what do i know

Dont rate Mathers but the lad has done well by admitting his mistakes and the teams failings. Wish the same could be said of Lee Briers at Wire who has spat his dummy out at the critics despite his poor performances and lifestyle choices off the pitch.

I have to agree with you AndyB. They have taken it on the chin and learned from it. I have been well impressed with TB's attitude... he is not going home without a trophy and he is demanding the same attitude of the lads by the example he is setting. He is 2 matches away from his goal and 2 matches away from being ranked up there with Brett Kenny, John Ferguson and Gene Miles in Wigans Ausie legends.

Good luck Warriors from a Latics fan. They seem to have finished the season well. Lets hope both Wigan teams can live up to their potential.

Good to hear Mathers admit the mistakes that Wigan made mid-season - unlike Happy Harry who slated fans and said the fans reaction was uncalled for and he is playing for himself not he fans.....Harrison Hansen needs to listen to fellow team mates who have admitted that they let the fans down and need to go out there and prove themselves to us who pay their wages. Mathers has under-performed and has a lot to prove, lets hope he does a Richards as I could not understand why we signed him during his 1st season that Season 2 he came out focussed and a star signing, lets hope Mathers does the same.....I think it is a confidence thing - hopefully his try last week was the start of the new Mathers! Match prediction: Wigan 36 Leeds 28
