Wigan prop Stuart Fielden is the big omission from England coach Tony Smith's 24-man squad for the World Cup in Australia.
Fielden was a regular for Great Britain throughout his Bradford career but, after being dropped for last year's Test series against New Zealand, played his way back into contention with a strong finish to the season with Wigan and was named in the train-on squad.

There is a place for Fielden's team-mate, Gareth Hock, while winger Mark Calderwood and hooker Mickey Higham, who have left Wigan for Hull and Warrington respectively, also make the squad despite missing out earlier in the year.

Champions Leeds Rhinos provide 15 of the 24 players to make the cut as Smith sticks to his pledge to select the men in form, with second-rower Jamie Jones-Buchanan one of eight Leeds players chosen.

Hock's delight at inclusion - see this week's Wigan Observer.

Full squad: Keith Senior, Danny McGuire, Rob Burrow, Jamie Peacock (captain), Gareth Ellis, Kevin Sinfield, Jamie Jones-Buchanan, Lee Smith (all Leeds), Paul Wellens, Ade Gardner, Leon Pryce, James Graham, James Roby, Maurie Fa'asavalu, Jon Wilkin (all St Helens), Rob Purdham (Harlequins), Mark Calderwood, Mickey Higham, Gareth Hock (all Wigan), Martin Gleeson, Adrian Morley, Ben Westwood (all Warrington), Jamie Langley, Paul Sykes (both Bradford).

Stuart, ignore this snub, when you get a phone call after the PNG match when they have to send Morley home injured, tell um where they can shove their World Cup. Go on holiday, and come back fitter and better than ever for next season!!!!! Chin up!!!

In two minds about Fielden not getting the call up. We could do with more than 4 props, but would Fielden be capable of playing the Aussies after last time, when he fell way short?

Good to see Higham and Calderwood in the squad, leaving Wigan can do wonders for your international career!

cannot believe it, if he's picking form players how come Fielden isn't in and Maureen Fa'asavalu is, his form of late hasn't been too good, good luck to Mickey though, having been twice to Aussie'92 +'96 i don't think they'll be quaking in their boots when they see that sqad!.

After seeing that squad I am thinking of cancelling my flights in a fortnight and going to spain instead!!!

What happened about picking players on form? Four props with one carrying an injury is not the best!!!

The selection of Calderwood and Higham makes a mockery of the decision by Wigan to get rid of them.

keep your chin up stu,use the close season to come back fitter and better than ever and show them what they av missed out on-we all know you are way better than morley and fa'asavalu shouldn't even be playing for england,is it that he knows he would never even be considered for his own country, and so wants to play for ours?
note to ste, feilden fell way short because he was flattened and also had personal problems having just lost his mother.

Wigan have made a mistake to release Higham and Calders - as they were proud to be a Wigan Warrior - and to be picked by Smith shows the quality of these players - who on earth can we get to replace them? Lee Smith is no longer available, we are going for a Quins has-been as prop. Mr L is off to Oz for 1 more aussie signing, who is available worth travelling all hat way that is still available? Back to the England squad - Smith last time round picked players that earned the right t wear the shirt not bog names like Nobby used to - although sticking Morley in the squad is a questionable decision, but that squad does seem to be a list of the big names with not all of them being in top form...let's hope he don't do a Nobby!

in the second half of the season fielden has played like his bradford form in the first half he was only a average prop forward he must be sad at missing out after playing so well take the rest and come back next season better than ever hock has after his ban looked worthy of his place and mickey higham is possible in the top 2 in the hooker position for england and should not have been sold calderwood has only played a few good games for warriors so why has he picked for england their must be better wingers unless tony smith is thinking of leeds form
