Wigan were reduced to 12-men but still came out on top in a nail-biting game against Wakefield at the JJB Stadium on Friday.
A late try by Joel Tomkins settled the game as the Warriors secured a 32-22 win.

But they had to work overtime in the second-half to cover for the loss of Richard Mathers.

The full-back was shown a red card on the stroke of half-time for leading with his arm.

Mathers looked stunned when he was ordered from the pitch – and most of the fans seemed to think it was a harsh call from Ben Thaler.

After a shaky start in which they went 4-0 down, Wigan fought back to score 16 unanswered points and looked firmly in control until Mathers' dismissal.

Tim Smith made his full home debut after Trent Barrett failed to recover from a hamstring injury in time.

Danny Brough kicked Wakefield – who only arrived at the ground half-an-hour before kick-off because of a motorway hold-up – into a 4-0 lead.

But after a stuttering spell, Wigan took the lead in the 19th minute when Smith carved through the defence to grab his first try for the club, Pat Richards' goal making it 6-4 in the home side's favour.

Minutes later Thomas Leuluai jinked over and Richards' goal opened up an eight point advantage.

And Wigan, with Stuart Fielden leading the forward pack superbly, went further ahead as centre Cameron Phelps swept through to make it 16-4 on the half-hour mark.

Wakefield were thrown a lifeline, though, when three minutes before half-time Mathers, who had been enjoying a solid game, was shown a red card for leading with the forearm – much to the shock of the Wigan fans in the JJB Stadium.

It was the second time Mathers had been sent off this season, following a dismissal at Warrington earlier this campaign for a high shot on Matt King.

Wakefield's confidence was boosted by the decision, and shortly after the re-start Danny Sculthorpe's try – converted by Brough – closed the score to 16-10.

Momentum was with the visitors and from the next play, Brough opened up the Wigan defence with ease and from the next tackle, Duncan MacGilvray dived over with Brough's goal pulling the score level.

Sculthorpe's high challenge on Micky Higham allowed Richards the chance to edge Wigan 18-16 ahead in the 57th minute.
And then Higham burrowed his way over from close range, Richards' goal making it 24-16.

But the Wildcats failed to give in and another ex-Wigan player, Oliver Wilkes, crossed for a try that Brough converted to make it 24-22.

Gradually, the Warriors retook control as Richards kicked a penalty to extend their lead to four points with seven minutes remaining.

And Joel Tomkins secured the win when he coolly collected Smith's measured kick, Richards adding the goal to make it 32-22.

Wigan: Mathers; Calderwood, Phelps, Carmont, Richards; Smith, Leuluai; Fielden, Higham, Coley, Bailey, Hansen, Tomkins. Subs: Paleaaesina, Colbon, McIlorum, O'Carroll.

Wakefield: Grix; Blanch, Gleeson, Atkins, Petersen; Rooney, Brough; Wilkes, Drew, Moore, Demetriou, Golden, Sculthorpe. Subs: MacGillivray, Bibey, Leo-Latu, Bibb.

Thought we were going to run riot with try's before Richie Mathers got sent off, I think it was a little harsh, a yellow card at the most.
The team certainly pulled together after that, and at times thought Wakefield were going to win.
If Wakefield had less mistakes the game could have gone the other way.
Higham played his heart out as usual.(why is he going???)
Pat was Solid at the back (best position if you ask me).
Carmont and fielden had realy good games.
And finaly I thought at times Smith was showing the class we've been told about,he looks promising.
We won that's the main thing!!!!

Tremendous effort, even with Mathers 'sending off' we actually showed what the fans have been asking for..Wigan pride. The forwards absolutely hammered wakefield into submission, and the half backs ran the show. Big game from Higham (AGAIN, NOBLE/LENEGHAN TAKE NOTE)and Fieldan stepped up and led from the front.

Now the rant.

I AM SICK OF THE POOR STANDARD OF REFEREES THIS SEASON AND THALER WAS A DISGRACE!!

To have an entire crowd constantly boo is not fans being picky, its people having their game spoiled by substandard decision making, weakness when big calls are needed and reaction to being barraged by teams calling for cards (by the way I hate that).

Refs need to get a grip and fast, they are rapidly getting a rep for ruining games a directly affecting outcomes, Ganson, Klein and Thaler are now officially the three amigos of bad referee's that i wouldn't let run a kiddies touch game!!!!!

After a poor first 20 mins, the team certainly came to life. Fielden led by example and had a very good game himself, plus the rest of the squad followed his lead. I thought the sending off of Mathers was unjustified and wasn't really that bad. His arm did rise but sin binning should have been enough. Lets hope he gets a favourable response at the hearing. Ref put Sculthorpe on report for worse offence. When does this come to a halt. Very unfair as scales of justice lop sided. Tim Smith is improving every game, and getting used to team plays and working very hard. I hope he stays next year. Another excellent performance by Tommy, and Mickey. Well done all the team. Especially in adversity. Hope Mickey's eye ok. It looked pretty bad and he gave everythin. Well done Wigan. They are now showing they are a TEAM to be reckoned with.

Just listened to the interview with Fielden after the game, he talked with a pride and hunger that I haven't heard in his voice since those first few weeks when he came to the JJB. He talked about playing in a real team like when he was at Bradford and aluded to the fact that we may, at long last, be forming one! Full credit to the fella, we may not be quite on the pace for 08 but please, please, please build on this for 09 and beyond.

Fielden should stay as Captain, he really led from the front. The sending off was a bit harsh, but it was good that the ref took action instead of just putting it on report. Should be "sending off sufficient" when his case is heard on Tuesday!

fielden has been consistent for a few months to be honest. mickey higham has also had a good back part of the season (since he learned he was going) but lets be realistic. mickey higham is NOT a playmaker in the way newton does.. we need to have several options in the team with playmaking hooker, stand off and scrum half and when lockers is back that too gives us variety. riddel with give us thise moves so therefore do we keep mickey on a large contract or keep the young lad?
its not rocket science. i agree that fielden should be captain.
i also agree with the shout that the referees are once again the talking point due to disgraceful decisions. lets just hope he doesnt referee fozzard again. and this "on report" is only a license to allow referees to seem to be doing something when in fact they arent. if sculthorpe gets a ban. wont that benefit warrington if they play them in the next game? last night those decisions could have cost us but we was lucky that in the first half..we wasnt really that good, it was wakefield who made so many unforced errors..their completion rate was terrible

dont know how much you can blame the ref, looked like he took the info the linesman gave him and made the decision of that, thought other than the sending off Thaler let the game flow and didnt put a foot wrong, it nice to see a ref that doesnt want to be the star of the show, id still have hime ref every wigan game over ganson or kline

i do not believe that misterlowe, knows anything about
rugby saying riddell is a play maker when he has never seen him play.and as far as lockers being a playmaker then he as not a clue he talks a load of rubbish.there are two sides to a game he must have forgot about tackling.and yes i am a wigan supporter.
