Ian Lenagan will jet off to Australia on a scouting mission later this month.
And a new recruit to replace Test stand-off Trent Barrett is high on his target list.

The Wigan chairman has admitted a recent bid to sign controversial Canberra Raiders' half-back Todd Carney ended in failure. The 22-year-old, who was sacked by the Raiders after two drink-driving offences, will play for the Huddersfield Giants.

Lenagan said: "Todd Carney was a classic opportunity, but unfortunately he was too expensive.
"We are still looking, but to fill Trent's boots is quite a tall order.

There certainly isn't a surplus of candidates either overseas or here in this country."

Wigan's owner will fly Down Under in time for the start of the World Cup on October 25. And Lenagan admits he is on a recruitment drive too, but made it clear that quota restrictions mean he can only sign one new overseas player for the 2009 campaign.

And he is at pains to out that the player must be the standard Wigan need and within budget.
He added: "I will be watching as many World Cup games as possible during a two-and-a-half week visit to Australia later this month.

"But the trip will be a scouting mission for Wigan as well because we do need to bring in new players for next year and beyond."

I think Wigan need new blood badly. There just is not enough class in the Wigan side and without Barrett I think they could struggle to build on the last few seasons. Like Warrington there is a bit of a chance that they could improve next year but Saints and Leeds are still way ahead.

It seems like Leuluai/Smith is not to be next year's partnership?
I'd much prefer it if Lenagan brings in a performing young player rather than an NRL bench-warmer!

Bloody hard work eh? Going to Oz to watch the as many games as possible for 3 weeks! Hard life

Got to disagree with you ste, Wigan are in the best position to improve with succesful academy and reserve sides and the youngest team in superleague. We have the wages of Higam Calderwood Barrett and Colbon (all easily replace except barrett) to spend and we've only brought in Riddell (i think, maybe have Pryce on the wage bill?)

So,
top reserves and academy
money to spend
younger improving team

all this and we were 3rd in the comp last year, looks promising

if i aint mistaken wigan finished 4th behind catalans? Just cos you scraped through a few play off games dont make up for a fairly average season!

Ste, wasn't this the season you lot were supposed to be challenging for the title, bringing in your big superstars like Matt King? If our season was "fairly average" then I'd be interested to know how you'd describe your season. I hardly think it correct to say we "scraped" through a few play-off games, the result against the team that trounced you lot out of the competition this year was a big achievement and in the end quite a clear win. But the season does include the Play-Offs, the hubcap for finishing the regular season top of the heap isn't really worth much (how I bet St Helens wished they could swap the hubcap for the SL trophy!) and we ended up 3rd in that. Although based on an average of our finishing positions from the last two seasons, our 3rd place this year was completely average being exactly the same place we ended last year...

A nice little joly under the guise of a "recruitment drive". It's no wonder our season tickets have increased.
Maurice Lindsey used to do this all the time. I just hope that he comes back with someone quality instead of another Vaealiki, Daviko or Seu-Seu.

STE

3rd in the comp, 4th in the league. Hardly call Beating Bradford and Catalans CONVINCINGLY scrapping through and we ran the eventual champs closer than Saints, and Leeds were at home!!!!!! Explain to me how Wigan "scraped through a few play off games." Last year admittedly we scrapped this year you having a laugh and as i said Wigan have the potential to improve! They are a team in transition, Warrington are unfortunatly for you ment to be a team at their peak

Warrington, 6th in the league, chocked in the playoffs and all your key players are players brought in who are not likley to improve,
Morley, King, the Andersons, Briers, Clark, Gleeson, Hicks Monaghan, Westwood. These have been around the game a while and these players ARE warrington so where is the improvment gonna come, honestly tell me which of these you think will be better next year and with a reason other than wishful thinking. and whats your youth structure produceding? Kevin Penny!

Wigan have agreat team without the likes of Barrett - the Smith/Lulu partnership is great so why recruit someone in place of Smith....whats Smith ben brought in for, sit on the bench? He is world class so play him....he really makes the difference when he is on the field! We have a Centre/Wing partnership of Pryce/Phelps (Pryce has rumoured to have been match-fit for the latter end of this season - but not played due to Salary Cap)- so no improvements needed there, the other wing/centre is great with Carmont/Richards. We have re-signed Mathers for the Back so where would Lee Smith play? And what Trent "star quality" replacement do we need - where would he play? We have Riddell replacing Higham, Colbon is the only departing player with no replacement, so maybe Lee Smith could be his replacement - but he won't do anything more than Calderwood could do! I have trusted Lenegan so far with his Carmont, Phelps and Tim Smith sigings - lets hope this scouting mission reaps the rewards without taking the salry level up.
