Sean O'Loughlin is hoping to blast back into the side in next week's derby against St Helens.
The Great Britain international is recovering well from a shoulder injury and is in line to face the Challenge Cup finalists.
And in a boost, coach Brian Noble is hoping to welcome back three other first-team stars returning from injury or illness.

Phil Bailey, Darrell Goulding and Pat Richards are set to figure in the Warriors' final match of the regular season.
O'Loughlin has to undergo another scan before he is cleared to play. But he said: "It's not definite, but it's looking good and the recovery is going well.

"I'll have to wait until next week to find out for definite, but fingers crossed."
Gareth Hock is still absent due to suspension.

Meanwhile, Wigan's plans for 2009 are nearing completion. The club are poised to announce that Australian utility Cameron Phelps and full-back Richard Mathers have agreed new deals.

Phelps was out of contract, while Wigan had an option on whether to retain Mathers.
The Warriors are also handing forward Harrison Hansen an extension on his current deal which expires next year.

Noble is likely to bring in one more overseas star after discovering that Kiwi scrum-half Thomas Leuluai will not count on the overseas quota.

Leuluai moved to Super League before he turned 21, effectively making him a homegrown player.

With no game this weekend because of the Challenge Cup Final, Noble reports that they have trained hard in preparation for next Friday's showdown at St Helens.

Saints have a superior for-and-against of 51 over second-placed Leeds but are unlikely to run the risk of sacrificing the league leaders' shield – and a home game in the play-offs – particularly as the in-form Rhinos have a relatively easy match against Wakefield.

Noble added: "The one team we haven't performed against this year is St Helens, and we want to address that."

Mathers offers nothing going forward and if offered an extension it should be for a year only

Wigan are a crazy club I tell you. They offload the players who are half decent, yet keep the wasters like Mathers. Madness!

Why does brian noble feel he has to bring in another overseas player. does he not think we have enough. i know most of our best players are australian or whatever but can he not give some of the younger lads a chance. were probably guna perform the same next season as we have this and with no relegation why not give the young players the experience they need instead of selling them to other clubs to benefit from our homegrown talent (which we have a distinct lack of)

I would personally rather watch a wigan team who try their best and play with pride but dont do quite as well than watch a team made up almost entirely of overseas players who dont seem to care whether they win or loose as long as they get paid. obviously you need to have skill and experience in a team but why just import it why not focus on what we already have.

it seems to me like wigans super league is bein turned into the premiership.

REALLY? We are going to bring in a "star" rather than yet another journeyman or "problem" player? Last Oz Star we signed was TB, good for 1 season, less than average since. The only star worth keeping that Wigan have signed recently is Pat R, the rest couldn't keep a place even on the bench in the NRL!

Mathers has shown some signs of improvement and I understand that after three seasons of almost continuous injuries it will take time to get back to his best but even at his best he isn't good enough. Very surprised they are keeping him, but glad they are keeping phelps.

Goulding seems to have taken his foot off the gas in terms of his development. It seems to me that the younger players that we let go at Wigan are inspired to achieve elsewhere but players we sign often don't improve as you would expect.

Olaughlin would be a welcome addition to any super league team and glad to have him back for playoffs along with Hock. nyone who doesn't think so is quite frakly an idiot. Despite sometime going for the off load that isn't on we look a much stronger team both in defence and attack with them in the pack. Although I would still keep Tomkins at loose and play hock and olaughlin in the second row.

Your opinion. At 13? no way, useful second row, no more than that.

Is Noble for real or is he totally blind? I've been to every home game & Wigan haven't "performed" for the full 80mins in most of them!!!!!

Get rid of Noble get a get new captain then we may have a chance of winning something!
