Cameron Phelps is relieved his future at Wigan is settled - and the young Australian centre has resolved to pick up his form after the weight of uncertainty was lifted off his shoulders.
Phelps admitted that his future at the club has been preying on his mind as the 2008 season draws to a close.
But the former Canterbury Bulldogs favourite has now signed a new deal for 2009 with a further option for 2010, Wigan confirming that full-back Richard Mathers, centre George Carmont and back-row forwards
Harrison Hansen and Lee Mossop have also agreed contract extensions.
Phelps said: "Negotiations have been going on a while and I was anxious to get things sorted out. I don't think I played too well in our last game against Leeds. I wasn't particularly happy with my form.
"But now everthing's off my mind and I can really concentrate on my game. It's our last Super League match of the season this weekend and all the guys want to do well.
"We've got a bit of a point to prove against St Helens."
Phelps arrived at the end of May 'on trial' for the remainder of the campaign. After a shaky start – he broke his nose and was knocked
unconscious on his home debut against Harlequins – the
ex-Australian schoolboy international hit the heights the week after when he scored two tries in a stunning 23-22 win over Leeds at the JJB Stadium.
Phelps has impressed chairman Ian Lenagan. He said: "Cameron has shown what a good addition he is to the side.
"He has settled in quickly and has the versatility to play at
full-back, centre or on the wing. He has proved to be a useful goal-kicker as well.
"He deserves his contract extension and to be part of our squad for 2009 and possibly 2010."
