Wigan ended a turbulent week on a positive note, beating Hull KR 36-28.
Pat Richards scored 16 points through two tries and four goals to help lift the Warriors back into the play-off spots.

Wigan battled back from 10-0 down early on to trail 16-14 at half-time, before taking control in the second-half.
But a late rally by Hull KR gave Sunday night's match a nail-biting finish.

Wigan could hardly have made a worst start, falling 6-0 down inside the opening four minutes. After some typically physical exchanges, Warriors old-boy Michael Dobson launched a towering crossfield kick that Amos Roberts leapt for but spilled, and Paul Cooke was on hand to collect the loose ball and send Peter Fox over in the corner.

Dobson – who scored four tries in Hull KR's 39-22 win against Wigan last year – expertly struck the conversion.

From the next play, the Robins powered further ahead as Clint Newton put Kris Welham into space and he sent Fox over for his second try – despite efforts from Tim Smith, carrying a wrist injury, to stop him.

Gradually, Wigan gathered their composure and with Sam Tomkins directing play effectively, they worked their way back into the game to bring the score back to 10-10 by the end of the opening quarter.

First, Roberts was involved in putting them into a good attacking position with a dashing break down the wing from a neat, if risky, Cameron Phelps pass.

And then the Australian was on hand to gather O'Loughlin's chip over and offload to Bailey, who forced his way over for a try that Pat Richards couldn't convert.
By keeping the home side pegged back into their own half, the Warriors drew level when Sam Tomkins jinked through the Robins line and found George Carmont in support. Richards made no mistake with the conversion.

Wigan were growing in confidence, and after the lively Phelps went close, they edged into a 14-10 lead from a sweeping set-piece move from a scrum which saw Richards touch down in the corner in the 28th minute despite the desperate efforts of ex-Warriors full-back Shaun Briscoe.

Wigan seemed well in control, but as the half-time approached, they eased their grip on the match and after handing the Robins easy field position with two penalties – both for infringements in the tackle – the home side re-took the lead before the break when former Kangaroos prop Michael Vella crossed from a rampaging run. Dobson's goal made it 16-14.

Sam Tomkins forced a repeat set early in the second half, and he engineered Wigan's next try as his flat-pass allowed Bailey to cross for his second try – though the towering Aussie was grateful for a hapless attempt of a tackle by Kris Welham.

A 40-20 by Sam Tomkins laid the foundations for their next try, which Harrison Hansen scored from a flat O'Loughlin pass.

Skipper O'Loughlin was also involved in next try minutes later, as Wigan punished a Hull KR knock-on to race into a 30-16 lead. O'Loughlin dummied a pass, and then bent the Robins' defence out of shape with a probing dart before sending Sam Tomkins over. Richards kicked both goals.

The Robins had been poor for most of the second-half, but when errors began to creep back into Wigan's game, the home side were quick to capitalise as Daniel Fitzhenry barged over for a 65th minute try. Dobson's conversion cut the deficit to eight points – setting the stage for an exciting final quarter-of-an-hour.

Carmont, who had tussled with opposite centre Jake Webster throughout the match, lost possession when he was clattered by Ben Cockayne and from the resuming set, Webster – who scored at the JJB Stadium earlier this year - touched down for a try that Dobson converted to cut Wigan's advantage to a slender 30-28.

That score breathed life into the home side, but after surviving a frantic attack by the home side, the Warriors countered with a long-range try that Richards started and finished to ease their worries. Richards sealed a morale-boosting victory with a goal from in front of the sticks.

Hull KR: Briscoe; Fox, Welham, Webster, Cockayne; Cooke, Dobson; Vella, Fisher, Wheeldon, Newton, Galea, Murrell. Subs: Fozzard, Netherton, Fitzhenry, Walker.

Wigan: Phelps; Roberts, Bailey, Carmont, Richards; Smith, Leuluai; Coley, Riddell, Prescott, J Tomkins, Hansen, O'Loughlin. Subs: Fielden, Paleaaesina, McIlorum, S Tomkins.

well done boys, still cant believe smith got the start instead of sam!! powers that be have gotta open their eyes from now on. Still laughing after two incidents, Pat richards dummying vella to put it under posts (very ellery hanleyesque)and smiths attempted tackle when injured - that attempt was probably his best tackle all season! he is soooooooooooooooo 2nd rate.
still got to learn about giving away penalties though! goood luck to nobby for rest of season! just hope that pryce starts to get good, good to see him as 18th man.

smith has been a total waste of money..yes hes had one or 2 good games but is that good enough? he couldnt lace trents boots. we are all feb up of the tinkerman and im amazed he treats sam the way he does and that sam was gonna come on as full back..whats nobles problem with full backs. why wont he play pat if needed i that position. its time he swallowed his pride and actually agreed with fans..we are not all wrong everytime. tommy has become inaffecive and maybe he should try mclorrum and sam at half and shift tommy to hooker.
my one gripe was disgustingly obsvios refeering. not only an outrageously biased pen count from which almost all their point came but the other points came from bemusing forward pass an knock on decisions. its time the powers that be looked at video evidence of their games and got rid of them...as usual hemmings was pathetic but thats what he has always been. i feel for the other comentators becauce they must feel embarressed by his obsvious hared of wigan. well dont also to lockers..after all the bad press he stood up today and showed pride. wish he would cut out the lying on

MisterLowe - I think the fullback comment was a response to Carmont's injury early on. Nobby might well have moved Phelps to centre and put Sam in at the back to take Carmont off. But thankfully Tim Smith got injured and allowed a better change. I've always thought that Richards is better on the wing, it's just unfortunate that he's also the closest we've got to a decent fullback!

On his day Smith is very good, but unfortunately those days seem quite rare. Even more rare are good performances from Riddell, and the difference yet again when McIllorum was on the pitch is surely not lost on our coaching staff. Riddell is slow, static and ineffectual. We noticably speeded up when McIllorum came on, with runs from dummy half and much more imagination from the PTB. Interesting towards the end of the game that Riddell was being used as a conventional forward, perhaps we could play him at prop and give either Coley or Fielden a rest. Big pat on the back for Paul Prescott today, he looked very good again and I look forward to him and O'Carrol both having an injury-free run of games in the future.

I reckon it was Tomkins who decided how Riddell should play by keep pushing him out of the dummy half position. And again for all his attacking skills his one-on-one defence is copybook - they still can't go without their legs!

Loyal but not so ancient,

Noble clearly feels that the integration of the younger players into the first team should be done slowly and that they should not be expected to play week in week out and to be fair to him I think that has worked quite well for players like prescott, o'carroll, mcllorum, and joel tomkins. But I hope that the injury to smith will keep him out for the rest of the season and will force noble to play sam. There was a great improvement in our attacking threat when both Sam and Mcllorum were on the pitch they make the opposition defence think because they take the ball to the line and pose questions unlike piggy and smith who are just good passers of the ball. Like a lot of aussie players I think piggy will take some time to adapt to the english game but I think he is a decent player. What doesn't work is having him on the bench if you are going to use two hookers you need to start with riddell and bring on Mcllorum to speed things up when the defence is tired it doesn't work the other way round. I think Smith is the worst half back i have seen at the club since Millward tried to build a team around dennis moran and he is the worst defensive player I have ever seen at Wigan. Dislocated shoulder or not he should have used his other bloody shoulder to hit fox while he was one the ground. I am still not sure about whether ainscough or roberts should be playing wing they both seem to have strengths and weaknesses. But playing pryce in the reserves seems to be a waste if he can't get in the first team maybe he should be loaned out like mossop. If we look at the young players things look good for Wigan's future and I think Noble should be given credit for what he has done behind the schenes as well as the results on the pitch. He has improved the club as a whole and hopefully we can put together a run in the last ten games to save his job. I think with stability in the club and the youngsters coming through wigan can get back to the top of the game.

Gallini,

Wigan 29/06/2009 19:02:01
It just showed again how poor the coach is. We were awfull untill Sam and Mcilorum came on. But like Nobby does every week he insists on bringin that fat lazy b*****d back on even though Mcilorum was playin out of his skin and him and Sam were runnin the show between um. The pig came back on and didn't run once from dummy half. Wigan looked flat and clueless again. The man is s***e and he has to go. Pay his contract up and send him home. Also Prescott was havin a blinder so nobby takes him off and puts Fielden back on who then loses the ball and gives a stupid penalty away. And the talk of playin Sam at full back is just ridiculous. He's not proven at that position and he would be unaffective from that position. We desperately need a proven full back for next season as all we have now is someone who is doin a job there.
Players that need to go: Smith, Roberts, Ridell, Bailey, Carmont, Phelps, Pryce, Fielden, Coley. Feel free to add anyone i have missed.
