Wigan are targeting Australian superstar Darren Lockyer - Warriors chairman Ian Lenagan has flown Down Under to find a replacement for wantaway Trent Barrett.

And high-profile Brisbane Broncos ace Lockyer, the captain of Australia, is believed to be the player he wants to see step into
Barrett's boots at the JJB Stadium next season.

Lenagan's imminent arrival Down Under has fuelled a whirlwind of speculation that Lockyer is firmly in his sights as a straight swap for Barrett who has announced he's heading home in 2009.
Lockyer, 31, would be one of the biggest NRL names recruited by Warriors.

And the chances of pulling off this coup have been boosted by comments from Broncos chief executive Bruno Cullen, who said: "You would hate to let go a player who has given such great service.
"But if there is something that's fantastic for a player like Darren for the next two or three years, you must consider it.
"I would hate to sound like I'm suggesting he should do it, but Darren has been here close to 15 years."

Brisbane are definitely parting company with head coach Wayne Bennett, who has been with Broncos as long as Lockyer.

Cullen added:"The last thing our new coach Ivan Henjak needs is for Darren to be taking off. But he has only got a year to go and everyone moves on.
"It is real tricky, but out of respect to Darren, we would talk to him about what was on the table."

Lockyer's agent George Mimis has described the Wigan link as 'fanciful'.
But he admitted he will be meeting Lenagan.

Mimis said: "Most of the Super League interest over here is fanciful.
"Lockyer's name is such a big name and such a big brand that he is an easy target for Super League clubs to get some publicity.
"I understand the owner of Wigan is coming this week to see me, but Darren is contracted to Broncos until the end of 2009."

Lenagan will be seeking assurances on Lockyer's continuing problems with his reconstructed knee.
He will undergo keyhole surgery in the next fortnight to alleviate
persistent pain in the troubled joint, which has forced him out of Friday's Centenary Test against New Zealand in Sydney.

Oh great another Aussie, older than the rest of the team, coming over here taking up half the salary cap, and then will either get injured or go home before his contract ends...

I think maybe you should be trying to sort out the players you already have IL rather than buying in another Aussie!

This is just spin to make it look like the club is doing something about the appalling quality of the side. Lockyer wont come and everyone knows it includign Lennigan - but it looks like he is trying. He isn't!

Lockyer was world class but WAS is the key word - dodgy knees and age have caught up with him - but you cant bet he wants serious money to come to Wigan for his pension plans.

For goodness sake, lets look at younger players in their mid twenties who are proving themselves week in and week out. And lets get more Wiganers in the side who will at least have pride in the shirt!

problem is crag that there are no wiganers good enough for SL st the moment. so pride has got to take a back seat. all the best wiganers are littering SL with other teams. clarke long tickle etc. on sunday there where a few wiganers (or adopted) out there and they are in no way good enough. our captain is a wiganer and has got to go down as the worse choice of captain in the history of the game. but i must agree with you about lockyer. big name sure but along with that comes big salary. im sure there must be a quality half back somewhere and i hope lenagan takes his time to find him. but i would prefer someone who will be here for the next 10 years not 2 or 3. tommy is improving week in week out now and his defense is a pleasure to watch sometimes. wigan have 2 hard super league games in wires and wakefield away if what happened at weekend doesnt have any affect on the team then its time they offered their resignations becauce the fans are being constantly cheated.

just as an afterthought. why doesnt wigan reduce the ticket prices considerably for the cup game against whitehaven (not workington, although its hard to see the difference in britains outpost) reductions of £2 are not going to attract supporters. why not make the game £5 and give something back to the fans and make it a family affair. this policy works when used by wigan and other teams in other sports. afterall mr lenagan dont you think after that fiasco , the fans deserve something back?

The RFL set the prices for CC games and all revenue is split with the away team - the decision to reduce prices isn't Wigan's to make.

I agree Lockyer is past his best and he is not a player I would be looking to recruit. That said he is still better on one leg than the guys we have got in the team. We need another overall of the team. Continuity may be the name of the game but continuing with the players we have in the squad is not an option. The money saved on the contracts of Barrett, Calderwood and Higham needs to be invested wisely on good quality players. At the same time, the squad needs to be added to because at present there is no competition for places.

I have said it before and I will say it again, we need the following changes/additions to have any chance of being sucessfull: Richards to full back; two wingers with pace (Colborn is a second row forward; a top class centre - Gasnier, Cooper or Hape (he is out of contract at the end of 2008); Pryce fit and playing; a stand off with pace, good kicking and distribution skills (Jamie Rooney); a world class no 7 with buckets of cockiness (Scott Prince, Jonathon Thurston etc.); two props with desire, aggression and a ruthless streak; a hooker who can lead a side around the pitch and create gaps (Cameron Smith); Hock back in the second row with a young Brian Fletcher; and a class act at loose forward (ball handler) - a young AF would do. We need a captain who would have got hold of players by the throat if he had witnessed last weekends performance.

Yes, I know that the releasing of three players will not free up enough money under the salary cap to recruit the players I have identified. Therefore, others need to follow! I suggest Mathers, Lulu; Fielden; Coley; Bailey.

When will Wigan learn from past mistakes? Also, get rid of Trent NOW as he's excess luggage!!
