Published Date: 03 September 2008
Wigan Warriors today tied up five players for 2009 and beyond.
Full-back Richard Mathers, utility back Cameron Phelps and back-row forwards Harrison Hansen and Lee Mossop have all signed contract extensions.

In addition, centre George Carmont has triggered the second year of his conditional two-year contract.

Chairman Ian Lenagan said: "We are pleased we have secured the futures of these five players all of whom are important members of the future Wigan squad."

Mathers signed for the Warriors from Gold Coast Titans in November 2007 on a three-year deal, with seasons 2009 and 2010 subject to his completing a certain number of games.

Although this target was not met in 2008, chairman Ian Lenagan and coach Brian Noble both believe that Mathers is deserving of the contract extension for 2009 plus a Wigan option for 2010.

Phelps arrived at the end of May for the remainder of 2008 and has now signed for 2009 with a further option for 2010 in Wigan's favour.

Mossop, who made his first-team debut this year scoring a try in the Challenge Cup tie against SM Pia XIII, has agreed terms for 2009 and 2010 with a third year option for Wigan.

Hansen has also signed a further two-year contract extension committing to Wigan until the end of 2011.

The fifth player to commit his future to the club is Carmont who originally agreed a two-year deal with the Warriors, the second year of which was subject to a certain number of appearances. George has easily reached this level having played in every game so far this season.

Head Coach Brian Noble added: "I am pleased that the future of these five players has been secured providing important continuity within a developing Wigan squad - important for the individuals, for me and for the club as we plan ahead for 2009 and beyond."

Gutted Mathers and Hansen have been retained. Hope to be proved wrong but they have both pinched a living this year, especially BTC Hanson.

"Richard Mathers’ enthusiasm and positive attitude since his arrival has been one of the deciding factors in our decision to keep him at the Club. He has a strong desire and passion to play for Wigan Warriors and we are pleased to give him the opportunity of a further season to rediscover his pre-injury form"

Sounds to me like the club know mathers has under performed and im sure his contract reflects that, his form is improving and why not give him a bit of support, Wigan have no devine right to have the best players and can only sign players who are available and for a limited amount of money. If Mathers turns out to be the best full back in the world and Wigan are unbeatable will you renew your season ticket? Cos that is the definition of a glory hunter! Support you team or dont support your team. Dont critise you team on decisions made for the future when you have no idea of all the factors involved and if they will postitve or not in the long run

i think we should hang fire before we start shouting the odds.
i can't see mathers being on a big wage, hopefully after last year he can't play any worse next year. with a full season behind him i'll reserve judgement

The only one I disagree with keeping is HH. I think his attitude towards the people who pay his wages is nothing sort of disgraceful.

HH has said a couple of silly things but he is still one of our best forwards, just check his stats against failed-centre Bailey! Phelps and Carmont are a couple of imported journeymen who shouldn't even have been granted work permits... Coo misterlowe, can I try the drugs you must be on?

are you watching the same team phelps and carmont have done more work than five or six wigan players together and i have no probs with harrison he does a lot of work maybe is mouth lets him down but as for mathers he as played around 20 games and you only see him when he gets sent off

Great argument, Kevin, thet Phelps and Carmont deserve new contracts just because they are better that some of the rubbish we have!
As long as people are happy to accept mediocrity, Wigan will stay as a second-string team.
