A mystery solved

It is a mystery that has confounded most of Wigan -
iIn fact anyone who has been to Asda in Newtown recently is asking the same question.
Why is this section of St Thomas More High School still standing?
Work started in December last year to demolish the massive site and within a few weeks it was all gone. Apart, that is, from this two storey section slap bang in the middle.
It's existence, months after the rest of the site was flattened, has caused a flurry of speculation in the town with rumour and chatrooms going into overdrive.
One member of a popular Wigan chatroom even suggests the reason is that the angels on the doors are listed!
More less divine reasons being bandied about include bats and asbestos.
Sadly, the answer is even more down to earth.
A spokesman for the Liverpool Roman Catholic Archdiocese explained: "It's quite simple really. The majority of the building has been demolished for safety reasons and to prevent vandalism.
"There are two sections remaining purely because we are in discussions with the utilities to get the gas and electricity disconnected.
"There have been some very unusual rumours but it has nothing to do with bats or angels.
"As soon as the issue has been resolved the site will be cleared."
St Thomas More closed its doors for good last year.
But the death knell was sounded in March 2005 after the school only managed to attract 70 new pupils for that year's intake and was proving no longer viable.
