Is the spookiest stretch of road in Standish haunted by the village's former rector? One local woman said she had been on a walk down Rectory Lane recently when she felt a presence behind her.
Since we revealed how one passing motorist was scared out of her wits earlier this year after spotting a perfectly-formed silhouette, complete with trilby hat, disappearing in front of her headlights, we've been flooded with rumours and speculation about ghostly goings-on.

But it was two weeks ago when out for a walk with a friend that the hairs on the back of the Rectory Lane walker's neck really stood on end. She explained: "It was a freezing night in the middle of February, it was only 6.30pm but it was already icy.

"But what happened next was really really strange. We were just under the bridge and I'd forgotten to take my gloves with me. Suddenly my hands went really warm like someone was blowing on them.
"Then my whole body went warm, like someone had opened a blast furnace in front of me, and then it went freezing again.
"This kept happening and I mentioned it to my friend and she was experiencing exactly the same thing at the same time.

"We walked along Rectory Lane going 'hot - cold - hot - cold' until we got to the school and it stopped."
Older folk in the area aren't surprised; saying the ghost is the spirit of former Rector Charles Hutton.
Standish Rectory previously stood on the site where The Owls restaurant now stands. The stretch of road now a hot spot for ghost sightings.

After the death of Rector Hutton in 1937 the rectory and stables, he'd re-built, were demolished.
One Standish resident, who didn't want to be named, was so intrigued by a comment from her late grandmother that she started to investigate his life for a possible book.

She said: "He lived in the rectory and his sister kept house for him, but for a while he was married to an unfortunate young lady who was deaf and dumb. He used to write out all his sermons in long hand, so that she could follow them during the morning service.
"This marriage didn't work out, and after a few weeks she returned to live with her parents.

"My grandmother knew the Rev Hutton well, but said to me 'he still walks around his Parish to this day'.
"She said that many people had seen him following the Glebe – the boundaries of his parish, and the places and lands that he owned. He had been seen near Bradley factory, and of course, Hutton Street. But the place where he is seen most is near the Owls in Rectory Lane, where his rectory stood.

"It must have been quite a sight the old building complete with stables, tennis courts, lodge and lawned gardens leading down to the lake with its fountain. He must have been very unhappy that it had been demolished!"
