A MUCH-travelled artist who takes the blues tradition of a life on the road to heart will return to Wigan for a long-awaited hometown gig next weekend.
John Fairhurst will perform with his new four-piece band at The Boulevard on Friday April 11 in his first appearance in the borough since December 2012.
John, who plays electric guitar and sings, will be accompanied by harp player Joe Strouzer, bassist Luke Barter and drummer Toby Murray, with the band combining his previous sludgy Delta blues sound with a heavier, more electric feel incorporating elements of rock and psychedelia.
John will appear on a packed bill alongside reggae-flecked heavy rockers The Hicks, minimalist hardcore duo Riggots and acoustic punk performer Michael Crossland from St Helens.
The night also promises to be a treat for fans of new original material, with several of the acts likely to be unveiling tracks from their forthcoming albums or EPs.
Promoter Rob Fairhurst said: “John’s really looking forward to playing in Wigan again as he’s been working really hard over the last year, playing lots of festivals and working on a new album.
“He’s now looking to get some gigs under his belt for the new songs, and I would imagine a lot of the set will be the new material with some of the old ones thrown in.
“It’s a great line-up and we’re hoping to get quite a lot of people in for it.”
John and his band are currently working on an untitled album, and will play in Wigan fresh from gig appearances in Bristol, London and Cologne in Germany.
Wigan band The Hicks will also appear at The Boulevard after recording a new album, while Riggots will continue its tour of the North West’s music venues with its metallic hardcore sound influenced by the likes of Black Flag, Refused and Lightning Bolt.
John Fairhurst, The Hicks, Riggots and Michael Crossland will perform at The Boulevard, on Wallgate, on Friday April 11. Tickets are £3 and available on the door.
