TWO Wigan punk bands are preparing to make their mark on the Continent’s music lovers when they embark on a European road jaunt next month.
Three-piece Gunpowder Plot will be joining fellow Wiganers Truro on a 12-day trip across the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic and Croatia.
Gunpowder Plot, who have become a familiar part of the Wigan music scene since they were formed in 2000, will warm up for their continental travels with a show in the slightly closer-to-home surroundings of The Boulevard on July 6.
The two bands have long been friends, after originally meeting when Gunpowder Plot singer and guitarist Rob Fairhurst recorded Truro as teenagers while he was working with Wigan Music Collective.
This will be Truro’s third trip to Europe to play, but for Gunpowder Plot the experience of playing shows in locations such as Amsterdam and Nuremburg will be a complete novelty.
Given the long history between the two groups, Rob is expecting an extremely enjoyable tour.
He said: “We played a show with Truro in January and they said they’d been to Europe and the next time we should go with them, so naturally we jumped at the opportunity because it’s something we’ve always wanted to do.
“We’re just really looking forward to the whole thing, it’s all new to us. We’ll be playing to new audiences, but just being in a band on tour is exciting in itself.
“Hopefully we will meet lots of people and make lots of new friends too.
“With us getting along with Truro so well it should be a really good experience. Musically too I think we complement each other perfectly. We’re both punk bands, although what they do is quite a bit more technical than our music.”
The only downside of the tour for Gunpowder Plot is the departure of founding bassist Rob Baker, who felt unable to commit to the band’s heavier gigging schedule. Fortunately, his shoes have been filled in the shape of new four-stringer Duncan Hannavy.
Gunpowder Plot will also be taking some new tunes out on the road with them as they will be taking the opportunity to showcase tracks from their new EP, which is still untitled.
Gunpowder Plot will play The Boulevard on Friday, July 6.
