A LEADING tribute act to rock music’s original Voodoo Chile will return to the borough to play for Wigan music fans this Bank Holiday weekend.
Are You Experienced? will recreate the unique sound of 60s pioneer Jimi Hendrix with a set featuring most of the guitarist and singer’s best-known hit songs at The Boulevard on Sunday evening.
The group will be making their second journey to Wigan, following a successful two-hour set 12 months ago which included storming renditions of tracks including Hey Joe and Purple Haze.
Are You Experienced? will headline a four-band bill showcasing the best of the Wigan rock scene at the Wallgate venue.
Promoter Paul Maiden said: “Last time they played pretty much everything you could think of, and he also set fire to his guitar at the end.
“He’s got that lazy style of guitar playing and singing which Hendrix had. It’s quite a weird technique because the fingers are moving fast but the feel is quite laidback.
“Hendrix brought all the genres together, with blues, jazz and even a bit of soul as well as being heavy and rock.
“He also made it more acceptable for the guitar to lead and play melodies. In the early 60s bands were still quite keyboard-based, but he got the guitar screaming and was more expressive.”
The Birmingham-based tribute act will be joined by three local acts, including a debut gig for new classic rockers Bigfoot, who include Smitten Kitten guitarist Sam Millar in a line-up featuring dual guitars and no fewer than three singers.
The bill will be completed by Ashton-based classic rock band SecondSon and modern rockers Phyxation, who take their musical cues from acts such as Muse.
Paul said: “I’ve always tried to put local bands on with the bigger acts, because I remember when I was in bands it was difficult to get gigs and we had to travel further afield.”
The summer of music continues at The Boulevard with a night of psychedelic rock in June and a Wigan visit from a top Bon Jovi tribute act in July.
Are You Experienced? will headline The Boulevard on Bank Holiday Sunday May 25, with the gig starting at 8pm. Entry is £6 on the door.
