A WIGAN folk-rock band is preparing for another stint of Merry Hell-raising on the road as it heads out in support of its new album.
Merry Hell has now released its third album The Ghost In Our House and other stories... and announced a video and a string of live dates.
The eight-piece group, made up of Andrew Kettle on vocals, Virginia Kettle on vocals and guitar, Bob Kettle on guitar and mandolin, John Kettle on guitar and banjo, keyboardist Lee Goulding, bassist Nick Davies, violinist Neil McCartney and drummer Andy Jones, have put together a collection of 15 new songs as the follow-up to Head Full of Magic, Shoes Full of Rain.
To celebrate the release of the album, which is being put out by Mrs Casey Records, the band have produced a video for The Baker’s Daughter, one of their folkier and more light-hearted tracks, and is preparing to showcase their acclaimed live show across the country.
To shoot the new video Merry Hell decamped to Bunbury Mill in Cheshire, a working watermill which dates back to the 19th century and is located on a site which has been used for industry since Norman times.
The song tells of an idle young man who falls in love with the daughter of a hard-working baker and is told he will have to change his ways if he is to successfully gain her hand in marriage.
The band’s tour in support of the new album starts with a prestigious support slot at London’s O2 Shepherds Bush Empire as special guests for long-running folk-punk band The Men They Couldn’t Hang.
Merry Hell will then embark on 10 live dates across the Midlands and North of England which includes a hometown show at The Old Courts in Wigan town centre on Saturday, May 9.
The band is also preparing for a busy summer of gigs and appearances at music festivals up and down the UK.
The new album sees Merry Hell continue to hone its brand of folk-rock, with songs tackling subject matter including loss and bereavement, sharp-edged political statements, war and the vagaries of love and life.
The Ghost In Our House and other stories... by Merry Hell is out now on Mrs Casey Records.
