IT would feel somewhat wrong if a film on Northern Soul didn’t have a strong Wigan link.
Thankfully, the makers of the new flick have been keen on the idea too.
As well as some of the movie’s being shot in the hometown of the famous Wigan Casino, three fresh faces from the music scene are also set to play a starring roll.
Young DJs Jordan Wilson, Ben Hindley (pictured) and Danny Patton have all been asked to play acting roles in the film.
The youngsters, who are regulars across the region, have all played a key role in the scene’s revival.
Jordan, who got into Northern Soul through his dad, said he was delighted to be asked to star in the film.
“It was great,” said the Winstanley 16-year-old. “We got asked to an audition for a part in the film and I wasreally happy when I got asked to star in it.
“I play a young lad who takes up Northern Soul and I go from wearing just regular clothes in a youth club to the proper gear.
“It’s the first time I’ve done any acting, it was brilliant. I loved being on the set and everyone there was great with me.”
Filmmaker Elaine Constantine brings her own unique approach to the fore and has hand-picked the cast.
Unknown actors Elliot James Langridge and Josh Whitehouse have been selected to play the lead parts.
It stars the likes of Steve Coogan, Ricky Tomlinson and Lisa Stansfield too in a cast which mixes experience and fresh talent.
Talking about the film, Elaine said: “When Northern Soul exploded out of the North of England (where I grew up) it touched young lives in a way that nothing had done before.
“It was spellbinding to witness; young lads, who never expressed themselves, were suddenly dancing with passion to this new sound.
“As a young teenager, dancing to this music gave me an overwhelming feeling of belonging and euphoria. It’s this same feeling of excitement and belonging to something different and special that I want to give to the audience of the film.”
Wigan Casino DJ Russ Winstanley holds free entry Northern Soul nights at the Cherry Gardens on the last Sunday of every month.
