A POPULAR rock band has released a heartfelt tribute to one of Wigan’s most recognisable musical exports – and there’s only one suitable place to launch it.

Midlands trio Dodgy, best known for their singles Good Enough and Staying Out For The Summer, have recorded (This Love Is) Bigger Than Both Of Us, a new single inspired by Northern Soul.

The band originally intended their tribute to the genre made famous by Wigan’s legendary Casino venue to be a limited-order release for fans, but they have now put it out as a seven inch vinyl single due to demand.

The release also features a cover of Northern Soul song Do I Love You (Indeed I Do), but it is not the first time the three-piece have tackled the genre, having previously recorded a version of genre classic track The Snake as a B-side.

The band will be visiting Wigan for an all-nighter at Hindley’s Rose Centre, formerly the Monaco Ballroom, to kick off the UK tour later this month, and are excited about showing off their new creation in the heartland of Northern Soul.

The gig will cap off an exciting year for Dodgy, which saw their new album Stand Upright in a Cool Place released to positive reviews and appearances at festivals including Kendal Calling.

Band manager Derek Berry said: “We are all big fans of the music, and we’ve always had that upbeat feel and soul edge in our music. We thought there’s only one place to launch this kind of music and that’s Wigan. We’ve booked the Rose Centre because it’s got a spring-loaded dance floor and everything you need for a good soul night, right in the heart of the still vibrant Northern Soul community.

“There’s also been quite a bit of interest from national radio stations, and I believe Russ Winstanley is going to be giving the track a spin.

The band have also made a podcast explaining their enthusiasm for the genre and the thought processes behind the new single, which can be heard at their Soundcloud page.

Dodgy will play at The Rose Centre in Hindley on October 20, supported by the Wigan Young Souls and DJs from the 45 Carat Soul Club, with doors at 7pm.
