ONE of Wigan’s best-known singers returns to Wigan for an intimate acoustic set this weekend.
Mark Frith, best known for his work in the Troubadours, will play the latest of his monthly Unplugged evenings at Indiependence, on King Street West, on Saturday night.
The evening will feature Mark playing stripped-down arrangements of a wide variety of songs and covers written by everyone from household names to young up-and-coming artists, and he will even be taking requests from the audience.
Mark is currently riding the crest of a wave of popularity after his band The Troubadours re-formed for a sell-out show in Liverpool last year.
The Troubadours are also due to appear in Wigan at Indiependence, but the gig had to be postponed and the band has only confirmed that it will now take place some time in June. The band are also looking to release their debut album for UK music fans.
In addition to his work with The Troubadours, Mark has also made a name for himself in the music scene as a solo artist and with the band The Captive Hearts.
Mark’s music is a mix of rock and pop influenced by legendary British bands including everything from The Byrds and The Beatles to modern North West acts such as The Zutons and The Coral.
The music also has overtones of other 1950s and 60s genres including rockabilly, garage and blues, while Mark’s distinctive vocal style has drawn particular comparisons with the front man of The La’s, Lee Mavers.
Despite the acoustic night being rather different from the classic British rock sounds of his other work, the event has quickly become established in Indiependence’s calendar and it is one that promoters and fans alike look forward to.
Indiependence promoter Mike Vaughan said: “He performs pretty much any song that the crowd ask him to, and he also showcases the talent of local singer-songwriters.
“It’s a very casual, laid back night, and there’s always a great atmosphere.”
The Unplugged evening with Mark Frith is on Saturday, May 26. For more information visit www.indiependencewigan.com or search for Indiependence on Facebook.
