STARS from some of the country’s most popular TV shows are heading to Wigan this weekend.
Actors from Coronation Street, EastEnders, Emmerdale and Hollyoaks will be playing a team from Sameday UK to raise funds for the charity Once upon a Smile.
The Sameday team will be mainly made up of players from Ashton Villa FC who play in the Wigan Amateur League and the referee will be the league secretary Dave Orrell who recently received an MBE for his services to sport and the local community.
One of the players, former Emmerdale star Danny Miller, co-founded the charity, following the death of the soap’s producer Gavin Blyth after a cancer battle in 2010.
Talking about the charity, he said: “Gavin left behind a devastated family when he passed; Suzy Blyth his beloved wife, his son Thomas, his daughter Anya and his newly born baby Carter.
“He was a true inspiration to me and I wanted him to be remembered, so I organised a charity event in memory of him.
“The Gavin Blyth Memorial Day which consists of a charity football match where the cast of Emmerdale took on the cast of Coronation Street.
“That same evening there was an evening gala ball hosted by Emmerdale and Coronation Street, this proudly raised a lot of money in his honour.
“When I came away from the charity event I wanted to do more, and speaking to a great friend of mine Daniel Jillings I was aware of his intentions to found his own charity.”
The match will be played at Atherton Laburnum Rovers ground on Sunday, August 19 with a kick off time of 2pm. Food and drink will be available.
Tickets can be bought on the day or in advance from Len Rainford on 0800 435740 or firstname.lastname@example.org, or Jane Wilcock (Atherton LR) on 07873 483174.
