Blitz promised as drivers flout rules

A parking "free for all" is threatening safety on Wigan's roads as drivers flaunt parking regulations.
Bryn's independent councillor, Gary Wilkes, claims that motorists have become so used to escaping a ticket in Ashton or Bryn because of a lack of wardens they are flagrently flaunting regulations. He alleges that motorists' parked cars blocking visibility at the junction of Wigan Road and Roseberry Road contributed to a recent crash which saw a driver and a passenger taken to hospital for treatment.
And he insists that he has repeatedly warned Metro parking contractors Vinci about the "wild west" scale of the problems in the township – without action.
However, a spokesman for the firm revealed today: "We are now planning a crackdown."
Coun Wilkes said: "Double yellow lines are often called for as a way of helping to keep pedestrians safe by making sure that drivers have the best possible chance of seeing them with unobstructed views at junctions.
"But there is absolutely no use in putting in these restrictions if there is no enforcement at all to make sure that they are adhered to.
"We had an accident in Wigan Road with the junction of Roseberry and I'm again lead to believe that illegal parking was a factor to the accident.
"I have had a number of complaints from residents there that they are having real difficulty seeing up the road to get their cars out safely because so many other vehicles are parked in the mouth of this junction.
"In fact, I have been inundated with complaints from the general public regarding vehicles in the Bryn area parking illegally on double yellow lines. Enough is enough.
"The problem is that word seems to have got around that you can do what you want because these areas never see a warden."
Coun Wilkes said that the junction at Soughers Lane and Wigan Road junction was also plagued with problems.
He said this was particularly prominent between the hours of 11am and 1pm as people stop to buy and eat sandwiches.
He said there were also continuing problems in Yewdale Road on the Landgate estate where First's 607 service bus is repeatedly being obstructed by parked vehicles near the shops.
A spokesman for Wigan council said: "While there is currently a shortage of Vinci mobile parking patrol staff available to visit our smaller town centres, now that Coun Wilkes has brought the continuing problems in Bryn to our notice we are arranging for the town to get some extra attention."
