Councillors are pressing for a proposed new health centre to be built on a garage site.
They are lobbying NHS chiefs to consider Standish Service Station for the new premises.

Ward councillor Neil Whittingham and Standish with Langtree councillor Judith Atherton are asking Ashton Leigh and Wigan Primary Care Trust to build the health
centre on the garage site at the corner of Avondale Road and Preston Road, because of its access and position on a primary bus route.

Last month, planning councillors refused the go-ahead for the garage buildings to be demolished for flats after the firm relocates to Bradley Industrial Estate.

Owner Paul Smith's scheme for 39 apartments was turned down by planners because of its unsympathetic roofing design and the outlook it would give to the street scene.
He has now been approached by the councillors and indicated his support
for the bid.

Coun Atherton said: "I'm sure this site would make an excellent location for any new health centre. It couldn't be much more central.

It is on flat land with no steep gradients on the approach making it easier to walk to for the elderly and infirm. It has ample room for car parking and has a bus stop right outside."

A spokesman for the PCT said: "We have been approached by Coun Whittingham but the possibility depends on the outcome of many, many issues. This is certainly one possibility and we are happy to look into any realistic proposals."
