Drivers who carry out illegal manoeuvres at one of Wigan's busiest junctions are set to be caught on camera.
A local councillor has vowed to stand on guard at Standish crossroads taking pictures with his own camera of people who flout the law.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said today that they would consider any information presented to them.

Independent Conservative councillor George Fairhurst says he is being forced to take direct action because of the number of drivers who are continuing to illegally turn left out of Market Street towards Wigan.

This is putting them in direct conflict with pedestrians in the busy village centre.

That is because the traffic lights summon them to cross High Street as soon as Market Street traffic gets the green light.

Earlier this week a mum ushering her children across the junction found a car bearing down on them while attempting to turn left.

Thankfully it led to nothing more serious than a heated stand-off between the angry parent and driver. Metro highways engineers were so concerned about the danger that they implemented a series of measures last year. This included building out the kerb in Market Street, new signs and warning strips laid into the road surface.

But still drivers risk the lives of shoppers by blatantly ignoring the warnings and turning left.

Coun Fairhurst said: "We have had two fatalities at this crossroads in recent years so the very last thing I want to hear about is a third.

This latest incident brought it home to me that something needs doing now and because the police are pretty stretched with a lot on, I'm going to do it myself on a regular basis.

"I hope that word gets around that I'm going to be there on the corner with that camera regularly and ready to record any drivers who are doing this manoeuvre."

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said: "We are aware of problems with drivers illegally turning left from Market Street. While we would not recommend a member of the public endangering themselves to capture such illegal behaviour on camera, any evidence presented will be investigated thoroughly."

Excellent!
So many times I have been driving across this junction and seen drivers taking crazy action. Once I was heading towards the church from School Lane and was forced to allow a driver who should have been turning right to Wigan to pass - as they completely ignored the traffic signals and road markind - and completely abandoned their common sense in the process.
Maybe the local councillor should consider a camcorder for all the drivers talking on mobile phones - another menace.
Maybe if it was their child killed in a car accident by a speeding/drunk/dangerous/mobile phone holding driver they would think twice?

Keep up the good work!

I ont get this one, you cant turn left? but you can go straight and also turn right? I would think there would be less of a problem to turn left due to no other cars to deal with, if the problem is the crossing them should they not move the crossing?
I dont really know the area so please dont have a go at me I am just asking because turning left is not usually such a problem, if it was turning right then I would say it was due to oncoming cars but I dont get this one.

It looks as though the next victim is going to be George Fairhurst himself, stood on the corner of a busy road junction distracting drivers with his camera..whos paying this guys wages? isnt law enforcment a job for GM Police? he should be arrested for loitering with intent. does he have permission to take photographs of drivers in a public place?

You don't need permission to take pictures of anyone in a public place.

Well done I say, its often complained about that councillors are merely feathering their nest - but here we have one taking some direct action.

WOuld also be good if we could get someone taking pictures of the motorists who push in front of other drivers who have been waiting in lane patiently at places like Queen Street in Wigan.

correct me if i am wrong but isnt it illegal to take picturse of people doesnt this break the rules of data protection, and doesnt this councillor have to return the images of all the people taken when requested, i would have thought the police far from sanctioning this would have been concerned about the distraction of drivers, and after all the fault lays with the labour council for once again installing a dangerous junction, many people from outside the bourough pass through there and must find it extremely confusing.

simple solution to this problem is to move the crossing further away from the junction
it is a complete cock up of a junction ie. no left turn this way no right turn that way
charge pedestrians pavement tax and walking insurance then perhaps they will have a right to a bit of priority
i know there has been fatalities at this junction and my heart goes out to all involved but as i understand the accidents were caused due to pedestrian errors not all the drivers fault
same old story blame the motorist and fine him /her of their hard earned cash
the councilor should spend his free time if he's got too much helping the elderly and home less and leave his camera for his holiday snaps etc

I think that the councillor may be breaking privacy laws by taking such photos as children could be photographed and this is surely not a good idea?. The real answer isn't cameras or improving the road junction. Its a by-pass!

It shouldn't be a case of a local councillor having to take this sort of action himself. As a Councillor, he should be in a position to demand (I know he's not Labour but that shouldn't matter) that highly paid Council Officers take some action. There are Number Plate Recognition Camera's available that would probably pay for themselves, through fines on Tax Disc avoiders etc. This junction is one the Borough's many bottleneck's that force a high volume of traffic past a single point.
I would like to think that if it was found that the traffic turning left at this junction were non-local (as I suspect), Council Traffic Engineers would, without coercion, review the management of the junction.
