A disturbing spate of serious fires has been striking Wigan homes and businesses. Five major blazes in just over a week have caused thousands of pounds worth of damage to property and put the lives of Wiganers in serious danger.
The devastating fires are all believed to be unconnected and most started accidentally, but Wigan firefighters have issued a fire safety warning.
While Wigan's homes might be going through an unlucky spell, firefighters are keen to remind the public it is possible to reduce the risk of a fire starting accidentally and they are urging people not to become complacent when it comes to guarding their homes against a fire disaster.
The recent incidents include:
- May 8: A family had a narrow escape when a blazing caravan set their house alight in Durham Street, Whelley. Only the quick reactions of a teenager prevented tragedy.
- May 11: A probation office in Warrington Lane in Scholes went up in flames and firemen were initially concerned that staff working late might still be inside the building. The cause of the fire is suspicious.
- May 13: A terrified mother and her young baby were at their home in Scholefield Lane, Scholes when a tumble dryer burst into flames.
- The mum was woken by a smoke alarm and the pair managed to escape.
- May 13: The former Twiss Bakery building in Warrington Road, Lower Ince, caught fire. The blaze caused traffic chaos and the road had to be closed to ensure the safety of passers-by. Arson is suspected.
- May 15: A blaze gutted a teenager's bedroom in Alder Avenue, Ashton. Two brothers escaped unhurt.
Wigan fire commander John Harding said: "We have been encouraged by statistics which show we have successfully driven down accidental dwelling fires, but urge the public to be aware of fire risks in the home and to minimise such risks.
