A Wigan youngster will claim a national cycling title on home turf this weekend.
BMX rider George Hawker is currently lying first in his age category in the British Cycling Federation's National BMX Championship and is so far ahead of the field that he cannot be beaten.

This weekend the Hindley 12-year-old will take part in the final championship round being held in Preston and he intends to finish with a flourish.

BMX stands for bicycle moto cross – a fast-growing sport among a new generation which debuted at the Beijing Olympics earlier this year.
And George, a member of the Preston Pirates club, is one of three Hindley Green brothers who have an eye on London 2012.

In fact when George does clinch his national title he will be following in the footsteps of his 13-year-old brother Michael who won it last year. The eldest, 15-year-old Robert, is also a keen BMX-er.

More than 350 of the country's top riders will converge on the Preston Pirates' track to see who will be crowned the various age group national champions.

George, a pupil of Westleigh High School, is streets ahead in the 12-year-old boys' cruiser category so championship victory is virtually a formality.
