A mental patient caused a disturbance after climbing on the roof of a hospital and refusing to come down for more than six hours.
Police were called after the man, who is a patient at the Makerfield Unit of Leigh Infirmary, got on to the roof.

The Avenue was sealed off and a hydraulic platform had to be sent from Leigh fire station to aid police negotiators.

According to
witnesses the man, who is believed to be Algerian, was
wearing a bandanna when he took two fire extinguishers onto the roof with him at around 4.30pm last Thursday.

One witness said: "He was threatening to harm himself while he was on the roof. It seemed like he was threatening to throw himself off.

"He doesn't speak any English but he was shouting for Allah while he was up there."

A spokesman for the 5 Boroughs Partnership NHS Trust said: "We can confirm that a man voluntarily attending Leigh Infirmary scaled the roof of the building and as a precaution the police were called.

"Following discussions with clinical staff and police, the man voluntarily came down. He caused no damage to property or harm to other people.

"In order to protect the individual's confidentiality, the Trust cannot comment further on the incident."
The man eventually came down from the roof at around 8.30pm.
