A social club customer has admitted savagely beating two women after he failed to see the funny side of a joke.
Michael Higgins, 31, of Car Bank Avenue, Atherton, admitted the charges of grievous bodily harm and actual bodily harm at Liverpool Crown Court.

The incident flared up at around 7pm on Saturday, August 11, 2007.
Higgins was in the beer garden of the Atherton Sports and Social Club at the same time as Sarah Cole who was with her toddler son and a friend.

Sarah shouted something to Higgins in good humour, to which he responded by threatening to hit her.

An argument ensued and Sarah's son was moved to a children's play area.
Higgins then punched Sarah in the face, knocking her to the ground.

Sarah's friend tried to intervene, asking Higgins to stop but he then punched her, knocking her unconscious.
Higgins then started repeatedly hitting Sarah over the head with a pint glass.
He then stamped on her head and kicked her body.

Then he knelt down and head butted her in the face. The thug then stopped for a moment before stamping on Sarah's head again.
