A manhunt has been launched for two vicious carjackers who beat and slashed their victim with a lump hammer and machete.
The 28-year-old suffered gashes to his arm and upper body as he was
attacked on the forecourt of a Wigan petrol station.
Police today issued an urgent appeal for witnesses to what they described as a "very violent robbery" and say the gang's target was lucky not to have been much more seriously injured.
The getaway driver also tried to run him down.
The attack took place at 9.30pm on Thursday when the man drove to the Shell services petrol station in Warrington Road, Marus Bridge, to fill his car with fuel.
After paying for his petrol, he opened his black Ford Focus ST and got back in.
With the car door still open, the victim noticed two men standing beside him. One of the men was carrying a lump hammer and the other was
carrying a machete.
The man with the machete swung at the victim and he stuck out his wrist in self-defence.
The driver got out of the car in an effort to defend himself and a scuffle ensued, during which he was repeatedly hit with both weapons.
A Honda Civic, with a third robber at the wheel, was driven onto the
forecourt in what police describe as a deliberate attempt to knock the victim down. During this time the man's Ford Focus, registration BP08 GHK, was driven away while the Civic was abandoned at the scene.
