A pecked-off shop manager has launched a one-man campaign to rid Wigan town centre of thousands of pigeons.
Stuart Aspinall, 29, manager of record shop Entertainment For Less, in the Grand Arcade, is so sick of the site of cooing birds on our pavements that he wants Wigan Council to get rid of them for good.

Now he has launched Pigeon Free ASAP, a campaign aimed at driving his feathered adversary, which he believes are a health hazard as well as a nuisance, out of the town centre.

Stuart, from Springfield, said: "Over the last few years the population seems to have increased rapidly.

"You can't walk down the street without them flying up in your face and there is excrement everywhere, which is disgusting.

"It has been a problem for years but now it has got to breaking point. Something must be done."

Personal experience fuelled Stuart's desire to rid Wigan of the pests, sometimes dubbed flying rats because of their reputation as disease carrying scavengers.

A friend, who used to work for an extermination company, has described the mess left by pigeons when they occupy abandoned buildings, and the cost of cleaning this up, to Stuart, adding fuel to his campaign.

He has also been divebombed by low-flying pigeons on the street, but the final straw was when one of their number bobbed in to his workplace.

Stuart said: "It has got to the point now where there are birds inside the Galleries and pigeons walking in to shops, which is just revolting.
"And when they are walking around the inside of the shops, well, it really is just not on.

"If there were rats running around shops there would be outrage but the fact they are pigeons doesn't make a difference in my eyes."

The lone campaigner has now set up a website where like minded Wiganers can add their messages of support for his campaign and sign a petition, which Stuart plans to take to Wigan Council.

A number of Pigeon Free ASAP posters will also appear at designated fly-poster across the town centre.

To add your name to Stuart's petition go to www.myspace.com/pigeonfreeasap.

I agree with Stuart. They are a menace. Years ago Wigan Borough Council used to put down poison pellets in the early hours at weekends to keep their population down, but not any more. Why? Could it be that Wigan's Labour run council think that it would infringe upon the pigeon's rights?

So this man detests pigeons, but who does he think he is saying posters will go up at fly posting sites?
Fly posting is a menace and people like him, if he does what he says, are adding to it!

i hear he is also known as dick dastardly, so why doesn't he just set his dog muttley on them ? but seriousy they are a pest - basically flying rats - is the reason the council aren't bothering any more just to save a couple of quid which they can waste elsewhere on one of their politically correct pet projects- or put towards the wages of someone doing a politically correct non-job perhaps ?

The Council also need to do something about the pests in wigan who stop you to ask you a few questions and then ask you to donate so much money a month to charity. This really gets on my nerves and puts me off coming into wigan shopping. I want to scream at them and say Get a proper job! i agree with the charities but dont want to be bullied into giving over my money!!

@ collie man:
in case you cant read, the article says 'designated fly posting sites'. these are approved places to post these advertisements and as such you should have a look in the mirror and have a word with yourself. menace ?? how is a fly poster at a designated site a 'menace' ?

@kitty23
this article is about vermin in our town and how it can be sorted out. what has your point got to do with this? you should sort out your own campaign or keep on topic with your comments. they are doing a job. what are YOU doing if you are shopping all day? doesnt sound like a 'proper job' to me mrs. part timer at best.

Stuart here! The "man" behind the campaign that's got the whole town talking.
What on earth's the problem with fly-posting then?
A valid means of promoting events in an attempt to drag Wigan out of the cultural void it currently finds itself.
As long as these posters are displayed in designated sites they surely aren't doing anyone any harm.
On a related topic, I have twice displayed "Pigeon Free" posters on the municipal noticeboard on the Galleries Market Hall, only to find they have been removed the next day. Did we lose a war?!
