Mum-to-be in council home row

A Wigan woman claims clerical mistakes have delayed her chances of a council house.
Pregnant Cheryl Regan fears that she is all set to become a "homeless mum" when her baby daughter is born.
The 19-year-old, who is expecting a baby within the next two months, says she is currently sleeping on the sofa at her sister's home in The Crescent, Worsley Hall, but must move out before the end of the month.
She was reassured that her name was on the priority section of the Wigan and Leigh Housing's waiting list, which is currently at an all-time high of more than 7,700.
Now she is angry to have discovered, she claims, that housing officers wrongly listed her personal circumstances.
But a spokesman for Wigan and Leigh Housing confirmed today that they are looking into her case as a priority and are due to meet with her.
They also refute that clerical mistakes were made in recording her details.
Miss Regan says that her housing situation has "really stressed her" and she is now suffering from depression.
She alleges that her problems began when she was made redundant by her employers at Christmas.
She says this ruined her chances of securing a mortgage for the Pemberton house she was intending to buy with her boyfriend, who lives with his parents.
Her dismissal is now the subject of a pending case before an employment tribunal.
She claims to have first applied for housing, as a homeless pregnant woman, in January.
Miss Regan said: "I can't sleep properly on this sofa at all and I'm now so tired that I have fallen down the stairs because I just can't think straight.
"I understand that there are other people looking for homes, but to be told there is nothing they can do for me when I am going to become homeless is disgusting.
"After several months of being on the council list I was disgusted to find that the council hadn't even got my details right on the system.
"I was told I was on the system as a private tenant and there was no record of my pregnancy, which isn't the case at all.
"I'm going to become homeless within the next fortnight and their response is that there is nothing more they can do."
A spokesman for Wigan and Leigh Housing said that it "just isn't true"
that they were ignoring Miss Regan.
But he pointed out: "Legally, we are only able to help people once we know they are homeless."
