A court may have to decide whether or not a Wigan pensioner accused of murdering his wife is fit to stand trial.
James Holland, of Severn Drive, Norley, is alleged to have murdered his 77-year-old spouse Joan in January this year.
Mrs Holland, who suffered from Alzheimer's Disease, was found by paramedics with multiple injuries at the couple's home at 4am on January 8.
Her 75-year-old husband, who has hearing difficulties, had been due to enter his plea at Liverpool Crown Court yesterday but William Swalwell, defending, asked that he should not do so.
Judge Henry Globe, QC, the Recorder of Liverpool, further remanded him on bail pending another appearance on November 17 for either a trial or a fitness-to-plead hearing will take place..
Before then psychiatric reports are to be drawn up on the accused.
