The newly-appointed Mayor of Wigan has vowed to use her year in office to raise awareness of issues that are close to her heart.
Coun Rona Winkworth became Mayor of Wigan after the annual mayor making ceremony at the Town Hall, replacing the outgoing mayor Coun John O'Brien.
Her daughter Gail Guy becomes Mayoress.

Colleagues paid tribute to Coun Winkworth, who moved to Wigan 20 years ago from North Wales, and praised her political work including her role as chair of the select committee.

They also praised her contribution to the people of Wigan and her commitment to her adopted borough.

In her acceptance speech, Coun Winkworth, of Winstanley, promised she would use her year in office to promote environmental issues, especially among young people, and to dedicate herself to her chosen charity, the Rainbow Room children's ward at Wigan Infirmary.

Speaking after the ceremony, Coun Winkworth said: "I plan to promote Wigan and make sure the people of the borough get a fair crack of the whip and enjoy my visits as much as I do.

"My main focus will be the children's ward which is going to be my charity and hopefully we will raise lots of money so we can buy some extra facilities for children and young people.

"The environment is also something that is close to my heart because I do recycle myself and encourage other people to do the same because it is only by doing these things that we will win on global warming.

Whenever possible I don't have carrier bags, I take my own bags."
Coun Mark Aldred and his wife Karen will take over the role of deputy-mayor and mayoress.

He is the youngest deputy-mayor ever to be appointed in Wigan and will become the youngest ever mayor of the borough when he succeeds Coun Winkworth next year.

Councillors also took the opportunity to pay tribute to Coun O'Brien, the out-going mayor, for the way in which he dealt with personal tragedy, the death of his wife Hazel, but carried out his duties with care and commitment.

Coun O'Brien raised more than £63,000 for his chosen charity, Breast Cancer Services, during his year as mayor. He was also praised for the fair way he conducted council meetings.

Have we gone completely bonkers. Since when did a daughter qualify as a Mayoress. The title of Mayoress was only a social, not political, title given to the wife of a Mayor. If the Mayor is female, there is no need for a Mayoress. What about a single male Mayor, would he have his son as his Mayoress or whatever. This is another example of Labour's political correctness gone mad. (Does the Mayoress qualify for expenses?)

I would just like to clarify a couple of points in response to the previous posting regarding the new Mayor of Wigan and her Mayoress.
Cllr Winkworth is by no means the first Mayor of Wigan to appoint her daughter as Mayoress. Cllr Joan Hurst appointed her daughter to the role for the year 2000/01. The year before this, the wife of the late Cllr Bill Smith, who died during his term of office, took over the position of Mayor and appointed her daughter as Mayoress.
In contrast, the Mayor for 20006/07 Cllr Eunice Smethurst appointed her husband Harry to the role of Consort – the male equivalent of the title Mayoress.
The appointment of a Mayoress or Consort is entirely a matter for the Mayor and is not dictated by a person’s gender.
The role of Mayoress/Consort is to support the Mayor during their year of office.
Both roles are completely non-political, with both Mayor and Mayoress/Consort working to promote Wigan and to act as the borough’s representatives at civic and ceremonial events.
Readers will undoubtedly also be aware that the Mayor and Mayoress/Consort work to raise many thousands of pounds for charity appeals during their term of office.
This year, the Mayor and Mayoress have chosen to support the Children’s Ward at Wigan’s Royal Albert Edward Infirmary.
Finally, because the Mayoress/Consort is not a member of Wigan Council they do not ‘qualify for expenses’.

Many thanks
