Wigan Athletic's players will personally refund every travelling fan who endured Sunday's capital punishment at Tottenham.
Skipper Mario Melchiot admitted Latics had 'badly let down' their fans during the club-record 9-1 mauling at White Hart Lane.

And the players have made the unusual gesture of offering each supporter, who bought a ticket from the DW Stadium, their money back in recompense.

Latics would not reveal how many of their loyal fans made the 400-mile round trip, other than to say it was 'sizeable' – with best estimates
ranging between 350 and 450.

"We feel that, as a group of players, we badly let down our supporters on Sunday, and this is a gesture we have to make and pay them back for their tremendous loyalty," Melchiot said.

"There is not a lot else to say, other than as a group of professionals we were embarrassed by the way we performed.

"We feel it was below our standards, and this is something we feel we owe to the fans.

"Now we have to draw a line under the game, focus completely on training this week and bounce back on Saturday."

Fans who qualify for the refund should contact the Latics ticket office, either in person or by phoning 0871 33 66 552. Refunds must be claimed on or before Friday, December 4, 2009.

WOW!
that must make things ok now.
great to see that a ticket refund makes things ok in your eyes mario.
what price transport and sundries?
what price humiliation?
what price a day wasted?
frankly its a bit disrespectful the way he says that giving a few quid each from their pay will make everything right. if i was a supporter of these guys i would want a lot more than a few quid. for a start i would expect them to be dropped to the reserves. let these superstars play a few reserve games to empty grounds. maybe they will have more time to reflect on their attitudes.

Give the man a break, at least he is doing something to appease fans by making this gesture, he is under no obligation to give anything back, least of all personal expenses. Do you give your wages back to your employers when you make a mistake......Yeah...I bet you do.

Spending your own cash and suffering the occasional humiliating loss is all part of being a supporter. Its a case of good times and bad and if you cant accept this is time to give it up.

misterlowe.

I think you need to get realistic.

Ok, it was their fault for the result and without getting stupid, it apprears to be a fair offer. I believe it also shows that Latics do care about what happened.

What other sportsmen/teams have ever made such gesture? They didn't have to do it did they?

I do not think putting these players in the reserves will do anything, they are already suffering enough by playing for Wigan.

if i didnt work then i wouildnt get paid..these clowns have give up how much each? maybe a few %
but i would also get penalised in other ways..if you read my point and its that they should be "dropped"
made to play reserve games to reflect on the lazy couldnt care less attitude that they showed..if you think a few quid is fair then your a clown mate..not acceptable. i would like to see players do that at man utd..what would fergie do?

In answer to your question of 'What would Fergie do?' When his team conceded six goals against Southampton, he blamed the kit his team were wearing that day!! Mr Ferguson tends to blame everyone from the FA, the referee, the pitch, the ball, the weather.

The problem with dropping the team, it would be cutting your nose of to spite your face. The team should be playing on Saturday to prove to us fans that they are professionals and can put an abject performance behind them.
