Gang violence has prompted a summer crackdown at a Wigan park.
Police say there has been a worrying increase in assaults at Mesnes Park since the evenings became warmer and lighter and often involve different factions.

Youths belonging to different social groups such as "chavs," "moshers," and "emos" have been involved in a number of incidents in recent weeks.
This has not only caused concern for the individuals caught up in the violence but also the safety of innocent by-standers and the reputation of the park which is about to undergo a major upgrade.

Mounted police have been brought in to patrol the Victorian park as part of what will be a whole raft of high profile measures over the summer months.

One officer, who had been called up from the mounted police centre at Hough End, Manchester, said: "We are here because there have been a lot of assaults in the park just recently involving youths belonging to different groups such as chavs and emos.

"The hot weather, light evenings and alcohol have all contributed to the trouble and we are here to deter further trouble." A Wigan Police spokesman said: "This is the start of a summer operation which we will be running in Mesnes Park with our partners over the summer.

"It is an effort to tackle anti-social behaviour and violent crime that has been committed there in recent weeks. Since the evenings got lighter there have been a number of incidents, mainly assaults.

"Various youth factions seem to be involved and alcohol is undoubtedly a factor too. We are stepping up patrols both to prevent further crimes."

He said that further measures for the summer campaign would be announced soon.

Maybe they should take a look at Leyland Park in Hindley too as that has become a nightmare at weekends. Kids are coming from all over the place now, not just Hindley.

This will be a case again of the police taking proactive action but the magistrates giving the criminals a slap on the wrist and allowing them to go back to the park again to cause more carnage. Why not shut the park at 8pm and have severe penalties for gangs noticed to be congregating after this time? It will certainly allow our police to deal with more pressing issues rather than babysitting feral youths.

People may be interested to know that WLCT are planning to include a 'skate park' as part of the 'improvements' to Mesnes Park. For those who don't know, skate parks are used - generally - by those kids who would be described as 'emos' or 'moshers'. WLCT are also planning to make 'other parts of the park accessible for other groups of youths by, for example, having floodlights on the bandstand' (I am quoting a member of WLCT here).

I have pointed out to them that this is asking for trouble but they have completely dismissed this issue (amongst all other objections) and are determined to press ahead with their plans. The situation above is a taste of things to come if WLCT get their own way.

Oh and if you assume I am against young people having fun, I'm not. I work with young people daily but I am well aware of the rivalry between these factions.

For more info see yesterday's story about the remembrance ceremony furore.

Give me the 'moshers' and 'emos' any day! They are no trouble, keep themselves to themselves. It's the chavvy scroats who cause the trouble - drunk, loud, intimidating... they are useless members of society - they should be rounded up and sent to Iraq and used as target practice. Losers.

Just need more police patrolling, Mesnes park is dire, its aimed at old people. 2 bowling greens and plenty of flowers, the tennis courts are bog standard and no place to play football bar the grass which is rubbish and its not even level.

I go on every day when I am at college playing football at dinner on the tennis courts, nobody plays tennis nobody plays basketball nobody plays the mini golf nobody plays bowling in the hours I spend in the park.

The area of the children is a joke, the stuff for young children consist of a slide and 2 swings for a park covering the whole town? It needs revamping quick.

I think a couple of security guards or night watch men should patrol the park, spend some of that tax money on keeping the park open at night and letting people enjoy it.

under the bye laws mesnes park along with most other parks closes at dusk, therefore those on the park after that time become trespassers and as such should be removed from the premesis, - if you break the bye laws then you forfeit your right to be there wether the park is open or not so andrew c should be booted out along with his friends, many years ago i worked for the council's security dept and i removed several people from various parks etc for breaking the bye laws, why should we have to put up with teen yobs riding bikes across the lawns and through the flower beds etc? it's time they brought the security patrol or park keepers back to enforce the laws without fear or favour and make it a safer place for EVERYBODY

To label these so-called 'gangs' is reinforcing the notion of 'them' and 'us'. Most of these 'gangs' dont even label themselves. A few years ago it would be our street versus the next street. Then if a gang of scallywags from a town nearby wronged us then the streets would unite to go and sort em out. Gang violence amoung younger people is not a new phenomenon and it will always be a part of our society.
