Pubs in Wigan are being warned not to organise so- called "smoke-ins" – or face prosecution.
A new trend has replaced the traditional pub lock-ins since the 24-hour licensing laws were introduced, with boozers instead lighting up after hours.

Closed windows at some pubs in Oldham have been steaming up with smoke after the doors shut at 11
pm – as pub landlords flout the new smoking rules. Environmental health officers in the area swooped on a number of pubs and issued fixed penalty notices against two drinkers caught smoking and they are now considering action against the licensees.

So far drinkers have not been caught dragging out their time in the boozers in Wigan – but the licensing manager at Wigan Town Hall, Maurice Dearden, warned if they are caught breaking the law they would be penalised.

Mr Dearden said: "We have no evidence that this is happening in this area. If it is we will look into it because they are breaking the law."

Figures released after last year's smoking ban introduction revealed noisy smokers had led to a huge increase in complaints about pubs in Wigan.

After the ban was introduced more people than ever were moaning about noise levels, intimidation and health and safety. Wigan Council normally receives 400 complaints in 12 months but by the end of
September the year-on-year figure had jumped by more than 100.

Yea, that's right, introduce prohibition and this is what happens. Remember the 'speakeasies' during the alcohol prohibition in the USA? That prohibition lasted 13 years, but they didn't have the internet and world communication like we have. This anti smoking prohibition will not last as long.

the government is making criminals out of everyday working men and women, there was no choice given to the people or the bar owners, if the smoking ban had been brought in the same as it was in spain there would have been no need for all of this, quite simple over there they give people choice something our government dont know the meaning of

Of course I can't condome the breaking of the law, blah, blah.... Pardon the cliches but sums it up very well, sow and you will reap and hoist by your own petard. A crypto communist government with Environmental Officers the new Stasi. We have a society where those who wish to live outside the law can get away with their crimes with impunity (class A drugs, guns and knives) while people who pay thier taxes (and smokers pay more than most) and generaly abide by the law are persecuted with the full majesty of the law. These people should be not fined but sent to a salt mine in Siberia.

This is happening up and down the country. EHOs and council licensing departments can make a few token prosecutions / on the spot fines to try and deter 'smoke-ins', but they do not have the resources to police it completely.

Hopefully, the ban will collapse before long.

"The day will come when the joybells will ring again throughout Europe, and when victorious nations, masters not only of their foes but of themselves, will plan and build in justice, in tradition, and in freedom a house of many mansions where there will be room for all."

Winston Churchill (1940)

Free men have a DUTY to fight any bad law that seeks to impose misguided values on others. Wigan is not isolated and more will follow. This bad law can and will be beaten!!

It is obvious that if pubs are having smoke-ins that they don't believe in the ban just like millions of others all over the country, whose voices unfortunatley have not yet been heard by MPs unwilling to listen. Thank goodness for the internet where the truth is already out.
Pubs want to survive, people need to socialise, what's wrong with that? Nobody bothered before the antis started spending millions of our tax-payers money on their misleading propaganda. I think it would be better spent on front-line NHS services than this. Smoking bans don't work - look at Ireland with 2% increase in smoking since their ban. They may have tried to keep that one under the carpet, but as we know, the truth always comes out in this modern age of the internet

Well said everone, especially Charles IIIX. Do people notice that the hunting law that was past in our Parliament is broken every week. Dont forget that we paid our so called MPs a fortune to come up with that rubbish. The same goes for the smoking ban, what an out of touch bunch of so called representitives we have. According to them we love being taxed, were all for the murderous invasion and occupation of Iraq. (Making us as well as them WAR CRIMINALS) all against hunting, we agree with congestion charges and we hate to have a smoke with our pint. Which planet do they come from.

Thankfully, the smoking ban is here to stay... Fantastic...no more stinking clothes and hair after a night out, no more sore eyes or throat.... keep your dirty habit to yourselves!
